Would an 01 plate Ford Galaxy clutch and flywheel replacement cost 850 quid? Some bloke on another forum I'm on has been quoted that (apparently the parts are 900 quid from Ford) but it sounds like he's getting ripped off here.
Any advice?

I would not be surprised, especially if it's a Dual Mass Flywheel.

Fair enough then - it seemed extortionate but I've no idea how much flywheels cost. Would the type of Galaxy (petrol/diesel) decide whether it has a dual mass flywheel or do they all have them?

Mostly diesels or BIG petrols

I assume that the galaxy in question is a 1.9tdi (VW engine) Yes £850 sounds about right for clutch and dual mass flywheel. How many miles on the clock?

You can always comfort him with the fact that he's been getting good MPG :-o

Yes, my suggestion to anyone buying a modern CR Diesel is to put the fuel money they save over the petrol equivalent into a piggy bank every time they fill up. If they do loads of miles then eventually there'll be enough in there to cover the cost of a new DMF or repairs to the injection system, as required.
