VW LT35 Timing Belt Tensioner - prettypennies

My OH drives an R reg LT35. Twice now in 18 months the pin on the timing belt tensioner/backing plate has failed causing pretty major damage to engine. How do I go about finding out if there is a manufacturing fault responsible for this? A chap he knows who worked for VW suggested that there was a known problem with this particular part.

Have any other LT35 drivrs come across this problem?
