any suggestions for an effective way to get rid of stale cigarette smoke smells in a car?

Neutradol works a treat. It kills the smell whereas air freshners just mask it.

Neutradol has been highly thought of in the past, in answer to this question. There is an aerosol spray and a gel block in a white globe, a bit bigger than a golf ball. They are quite pricey but the globes can sometimes be found for £1 in - wait for it - a Pound Shop! If you can't find them cheap they are still effective
