The German ADAC have conducted front and rear crash tests to see what happens with stick-on mobile and satnav holders, hang/strap-on dvd screens and headrest coat hanger.
The results (in German) + 3 short videos are at:

Basically, the stick on holders held fast, but in the rear-end crash, the mobile released and flew backwards through the cabin with some force.
In the frontal crash, the dvd screen swung over the headrest and clouted the passenger's head with a force that would have caused injury. The coathanger stayed in place, though could have caused injury to head and face of rear seat passenger (predicable, that one).
(Some years ago, they crash tested an estate 'on a summer holiday journey' - the front passenger with legs stretched out on the dashboard and a surfbourd lying on top of the luggage in the rear.
The passenger airbag folded the dummy like a penknife (probaly fatally in real life) and the surf board surfed its way through the car and windscreen. If anyone had been in its way...)

A valid comment to add to this post is, do not carry your safety helmet on the rear parcel shelf!

Thats why the dog guards are in place in both our estates - even though the dogs only travel in the volvo.
Ive never had one of the soft mesh guards - only the solid ones - be interesting to see if the pull up mesh stuff actually stops much

An easier link to use:
tinyurl.com/pftg4 { http:// bit of this link removed as it still portals through this site and adds to HJ's bandwidth because it links to video clips - DD}
