This car is great but not too good on tracks or rough roads,as its so low,is it easy enough to raise the height slightly by changing shocks to adjustable ones?If so,which ones are recomended and is it a big job?

In order to raise the ride height, you need to modify the springs rather than the dampers.

Golf mk3, 4, 5? Adjustable dampers dont adjust ride height, its damping rate only. Adjustable height suspension kits generally start at standard height and go lower, not raise the ride height

You may be able to buy taller / stronger springs from the above. They do a spring spacer kit too that may be of use to you. Speak to Steve if he's available

Lifting up your car will screw-up it's handling;you could also replace your low-profile tyres with larger protiles but these would affect handling and overall gearing.

Tyres with a larger profile would catch on the arches and make the speedo under read, which is illegal

Why would you want to raise the height, what do you think that is going to do. ?? Regards Peter
|
Because I live down a track and the bottom of car is getting scraped as its so low

Not if you fit smaller wheels to compensate for the larger tyres. The overall circumference would then remain the same.

So how will that raise the ride height of the car? The OP was about raising the ride height for clearance purposes

Good point.

When you said tracks I thought you had been going to ' track days' . You will have to fit longer springs or fix the track you live down. A higher profile tyre will help but it will only lift it 1or 2 cm. Regards Peter

Mechanic had a look at springs and says theyre red which he thinks means they are not standard gl tdi springs, and he thinks its been lowered. Is theyre any way to confirm this? How can I tell for sure if the springs are standard or upgraded? This car is way too bouncy on bumps etc,are all gl tdi`s like this ? Im not risking best part of £200 to replace springs to standard ones if its still going to bounce around on bumps/uneven roads etc

its a mk 3 diesel the springs are bound to be past their best anyway plus the shockers
Try and find the original height of centre of wheels to wing lip and compare with yours..........
|
Sounds like its been lowered, original springs are black. If you go ahead and fit new springs you'll need to add new rear bumpstop to your budget, possibly dampers and front topmounts too.
