2001 bmw 320d on a Y plate - Duncan
Hi
I have been offered this car for 6000, but its high miles of 115,000 put me off a little. It has a dealer service history for the first 100,000 miles, then serviced by a local garage over the past 2 years or so.
In need of a good clean, It seems ok
Any advice would be appreciated, how does the price sound to you?
Duncan
PS- Am I right in thinking this modle did not change until 2005?
Thanks

Check the turbo thoroughly, any unusual noises or smoke then walk.

Good motor otherwise. Fuel economy in the early to mid fifties. Don't hide anything under the seats, the airbag wiring is very fragile.........take a third party warranty if you can.

All 3 series were revised in Sep 2001. The car you are looking at is a 136hp car, in Sep 2001 (51 plate) they went up to 150hp along with steering and suspension changes. There were slight cosmetic changes too. Most notably, the side indicater lenses became 'upswept', the model you are looking at is 'downswept'.

Do bear in mind that there is a good £500-700 or so difference between a 51 plate and a Y plate car at this sort of mileage.

Friend has one on a 02. He's lavished it with neglect and it goes well despite being 80k up. I think this would be the 150bhp version. Nothing's ever broken on it apart from an Airbag warning light coming on, he'd stuffed his a book under the seat and disturbed a connection to the seat belt buckle. Cost him a fiver to fix from an indie specialist. (Probably something like £40.00+ from a dealer)

£6k is a good price. A colleague just paid the same for a W reg example with 95,000 on th clock.

If from a private seller, your friend overpaid by about £250. if from a dealer, I would say it is a good deal.

As Xileno says, beware the turbo. If it hasn't gone, it probably will, at a change cost of around £1500...it's your call.

Btw, a work mate had his heart set on one of these, until he test drove it. He's now sticking with Audi.

£6k is rather expensive. I wouldn't pay anything more than £5600 at most.

I am quite up to date with prices, since I am trying to sell mine. I will let mine go for around £9k - it is in excellent condition, very clean. Silver Metalic, 2002, 52 plate, manual with a recent service currently on 89k miles.
