Golf TDI 1999 Cambelt Cost - Owendaboy
Hi

My Golf has just passed 60,000 miles and needs cambelt changing, I got a quote from Volkswagen for £500 .

I phoned a local garage and they quote £90 VAT.

The costs seems so far apart any ideas on what an average cost would be for a cambelt change??

Thanks

Any good with spanners? This is for the MK3 Golf but yours will be similar.

Genuine VAG parts alone will cost £90. Belt, tensioner and idler. I'd also suggest you change pas / aircon belts too for peace of mind.

the vag quote is way over the top, the local is too cheap.

You want to make sure that they change the tensioner as well and possibly the water pump and idlers.

I would expect the parts to be about £100. belt is cheap ~ £20/30 tensioner could be £50+

check your engine code and look at eurocarparts or gsf for price guidelines.

If you only told VW it was a Golf TDI then they may have assumed a more recent TDI 130BHP and yes they do quote about £500. I would go and find a VW specialist Indi in your area and use them. Regards Peter

The cost of the mk4 cambelt change is much higher (than the mk3, etc) because one of the engine mounts goes through the middle of the belt. This necessitates supporting the engine while doing the job and new engine mounting bolts because they are the stretch type. If you contemplate doing this job yourself, be warned that some engine blocks have been known to break when the engine mounts are re-fitted - correct and accurate torque wrench needed....

Personally i would also change the water pump while the belt is off, the plastic impeller types fitted at the factory don't last forever and the whole job needs doing again if it fails (sometimes with dissaterous consequences). Brass impeller type replacement water pumps are about 24 pounds + vat from GSF carparts.

With some VW diesels the fuel pump also needs alectronically re-timming after the belt change, otherwise cold starting can get hard.

It is do-able tho:

My Astra 1.6 petrol cost £200 less to change the belt than my Mazda 323 diesel, both at main dealers. Is it a diesel issue when it comes down to cost?

Had our Golf TDi pd 115bhp cambelt done at a VAG main dealer last year, paid around £320, (had a brake light switch at the same time) using my loyalty discount card (10%?). Does the £500 quoted include service too?

Mk3 TDis belt was done using the link above and was straight forward enough
