Megane timing belt broke - icarusi

The timing belt broke on my '98 1390cc Megane yesterday. AFAIK the engine is an E7J. Is there likely to be cylinder/valve damage with this engine after timing belt failing?

My local repairer thinks so. Lucky to get change from £500! At that rate I'll take the cylinder head off myself to check. The locals are quoting circa £18 for a replacement belt but the Renault dealer wants £72 but includes a new 'tensioner' can I do better than that for the tensioner alone?

according to my book your engine will have bent valves
this engine is fairly basic in design why not let a good local independant sort it for you rather than the main agent as their labour rates will be less?
