MGF VVC - fan keeps running - Sorry_Roger
I have a P reg MGF VVC. The radiator went in traffic the other week (tho' fortunately not the Head Gasket). My local (non-MG) garage fitted a new radiator which works fine but they have pointed out that the secondary fan is running constantly. Their electrician has sent the ECU away for testing (come back OK) and suggests that the VVC unit is causing a "spike" which is interfering with the electrical circuits and causing the fan to remain on all the time.

His suggested solution is to ask an MG dealer to change the VVC unit at a cost of around £600/650.

We've used this garage for a while with various cars (eg Citroen ZX & Toyota Avensis) and we trust them - however I am concerned that their electrician doesn't know what he is talking about. Any thoughts or suggestions about what else might be causing the problem?

We live in Kent by the way.

I'd get it away from the 'local' dealer and get it down to an auto electrician for a cheap 2nd opinion. If the secondary fan wasn't running all the time before the rad change then who/what has spiked the ECU, I think you should be told!

Did he turn the aircon off? The secondary fan on many cars often runs constantly when the aircon is on. This is to boost the airflow through the radiator / condensor combo to give efficient aircon operation without overheating the motor.

Try turning the aircon off and see if that cuts the fan out - there might be a delay tho'.

Another thought: where is the rad? at the back? if it is then the fan may be supposed to run all the time to give sufficient airflow. Why not ring your nearest MG service agent and ask them.

I'd agree with the aircon comments - the MGF has a second radiator fan if aircon is fitted.
Or does he mean the fan in the engine bay ? this should run only rarely in the VVC model.

I would very much doubt that it is the ECU - much more likely to be either (1) normal operation, or (2) failed sensor or wiring / connectors.

If your radiator has failed then check the two underfloor coolant pipes. most MGF specialists recommend that these are replaced at the same time as the rad.
