Does anyone know whether old style Rover 200's (1990-95 models) are prone
to wear on the teeth of their flywheels as my 92,000 mile 214 is grinding its starter on start up (as though I'd try to start it while the engine is running) The fault is inetermittent but getting worse. I have looked & there appears to be some wear on the teeth in the four areas the flywheel comes to rest.
This is annoying because two years ago I replaced the flywheel as the old one had severe wear on the teeth. At that time the starter jammed & refused to operate at all, leading to several AA call outs. Has anyone experienced similar?

I used to have a 214GSi (H/1990) - ran to 150,000 miles before engine needed a decoke. Not aware of any problems regarding flywheel wear though.

Haven't heard of this sort of failure for a while, as the newer cars start so much more quickly. I'm surprised there are four wear areas. With a 4 cylinder and a single plane crank there are only two - the engine comes to a halt when one or other of each pair of pistons comes to its compression stroke. Has someone moved the flywheel by 90 degrees rather than changing it last time? Was the starter pinion changed last time? Putting a worn pinion on a new flywheel will accelerate the wear.

John

I used to have a Ford escort that had starter problems due to jamming. I got round it by putting it in gear and pushing about 2 feet until the starter released. Later on I bought a new starter at £30 exchange which solved the problem.

The starter is not meshing properly. Replace it ASAP. Regarding JS comment on replacing flywheel 90 deg out is not possible as the flywheel carries the trigger ring for the pickup for the ignition and if the flywheel is put on incorrectly the TDC "gap" on the trigger ring will be out of position and the motor won't go. Good luck for the next 100K miles!

I had a 93K 214 which made these noises. Garage examined it but said no sign of harm being done, so ignored it. Car still going OK when I sold it with 88000 on the clock.
