When the engine is running I am unable to engage reverse gear without crashing the gears. The clutch is OK.

The clutch may not be disengaging the drive from the engine.
Older cars do not have syncromesh on reverse gear and the gears crunch if the clutch drags.
Check that the clutch cable is correctly adjusted and the clutch pedal is at the correct height.
If the noise persists, select a forward gear with the clutch pedal depressed, keep it in gear for a few seconds, so the gearbox shafts slow down, then move the gear lever straight into reverse.
If the above does not work I would think there is a problem with the gearbox.
