I know it may not be possible for the money I have to spend but i would like ABS and central locking.

Sorry for above post...bit of a cock up lol.
I am looking to buy my first car soon. Must be big enough to carry my drum kit aswell as other band related gear. I have £1500-£2000 to spend. I know it may not be possible for the money i would like ABS and central locking.
Been thinking about these cars and appreciate opinions on them regarding reliability, cheapness to run, safety etc etc
all 5door hatches or estates
Vauxhall Astra mk3 1.6 or 1.7td
Ford Escort 1.4or1.6/Mondeo 1.8td
Peugeot 306
VW Golf mk3
VW Passat estate - a bit bigger than the others but space would be handy
Are there any others that would be worth thinking about?
Would I be better off buying the car privately to get more for my money?
Am I correct to buy a car on the basis of condition over age for this kind of money?
Thanks for any help.

Yeah it would be so I don't want to retro fit them I'd prefer them to be there in the first place...not the end of the world if not.
Really enjoyed reading all the other messages so felt that this would be a good place to get some advice.
Sorry for my dodgy posting it's my first time here.

How about a Focus Estate? £1,950 gets you a tddi (not the best engine, but ok) on a W plate.
Or a Mondeo estate- £1,425 gets you a W plate

Thanks for the info. A Focus would be nice as would a Mondeo. Where would be the best place to look for cars like this , local paper, auction etc?

To get a good idea look on e bay.
Have a good look at the ads to filter out the trade ones, then look at what they are going for as the auctions end.

You want a Mondeo.
Not only would you get your ABS and your central locking but for this money you could easily get a 2000 Mk2 Ghia or a 98-00 Mk2 Ghia X, and you'd also have air con, cruise control, onboard computer, electric seats, CD changer, traction control, etc etc.
It'd be reliable and spacious as well.
|
Oh, and it'd be newer or cheaper than the equivilent Focus, despite being bigger and having more kit.
No reason to buy a Focus over a Mondeo unless you specifically want a smaller car IMHO.
|
Just make sure it's a petrol model, early Mondeo diesels not very nice IMHO.
|
I think cost of insurance could be major issue here. I should get a few quotes for various different models before buying anything.

Theres a drummer lives down the road from me, he seems to buy old/.cheap and thorow away when broken - but I dont know where he has to leave it. In the last couple of years he has had a saab 9000 hatch (H plate), peugot 405 estate and is currently running a honda aerodeck(?sp) on an L plate.
I guess size of drum kit might matter and as Aprilia says - insurance for musicians isnt cheap

Which is better out of the petrol engines? The 2.0i would be great but I'm slightly worried about fuel consumption.
|
I don't know which is the best petrol engine, I just know from experience that the older diesels were a bit noisy. The new TDCi range are great but they will be out of your price range.

A Mondeo does seem the way to go especially as the only Focus's in my price range on autotrader have done a million miles.

Before HJ or anyone else says it - USE THE AUTOTRADER LINK TO YOUR LEFT

Apologies for shouting... ;-)
There are lots of cars around - just be careful!

Picking up on the insurance - how old/long have you held a licence? I would expect the insurance on a mondeo td to be around £12-£1400 for a 19yr old with 2yrs driving and no no-claims.
|
I think the point is that if the guy is going round pubs/clubs etc etc doing turns regularly then he's not going to be a very popular customer with insurance co's.
|
Thats what i was thinking with the cost, admittedly based on a student, but the risk profile can't be much dearer. Presumably its just business class 1 use tho'??

Cheers for all the advice so far.

Yeah the insurance is a bit of a worry. I'm 22 and held a licence for 4 years and had a clean bill of health as a named driver (Direct Line) for that period as have shared a car.
I have researched and discovered that Direct Line actually count the time I've been a named driver towards an NCB. An internet quote for a mondeo 2.0i ghia estate came out at £550 fully comp but obviously this is not totally accurate in terms of my occupation, which is part warehouse person and part lighting tech for a music venue.
I'm not currently a musician for a living but it is a hobby and I'm usually out rehearsing twice a week and gigging maybe once a week.
|
I suggest you talk to a broker who can advise on your occupation dilemma.
Try this one.....
Peter Goord on 01752 361888. They're in Plymouth, and are usually very helpful.
Ask to speak to either Victor Goord or Wayne.
I have no connection with them other than I have insured 2 vehicles with them for a few years now.

In that case, I would suggest that the insurance is okay as it is for domestic/pleasure - just don't expect them to cover hundreds of pounds worth of gear.
|
My Mondeo cost £1200 to insure comprehensively at 19 with no NCB, modifications declared.
