C5 HDI - Turbo pressure too high! - Ben79
My C5 2.0 HDI 110 has always driven perfectly. In the last month however, the car has been feeling short of power.

Most of the time the car has been a bit slow to accelerate, and it was almost impossible to accelerate up motorway hills.

Every so often the car would "cough", followed by a cloud of black smoke and an abundance of power (how it should be).

After coughing, the car would feel great for a varying amount of time. The car usually performed better before the water reached normal temperature. The oil reaches "urban" temperature a few miles later. (C5's have oil and water temp guages).

I initially thought it was an EGR or MAF problem, hopefully more likely the former, but my main dealer says it is the turbo operating at too high pressure. I queried this saying isnt there a valve to release pressure. He said yes, but thats whats broken and isnt available seperately.

There has been a whining noise on over-run, best heard when stationary with the bonnet open, the noise has existed for a year and was queried twice while in warranty. The dealer has not yet asked Citroen about a goodwill payment (5 1/2 months out of warranty).

If a turbo is producing too high a pressure, what is the outcome of long term use? Would a rubber hose pop off before the engine self destructs? Could it cause any long term damamge to the engine?

Does this sound reasonable to anyone? I intend to get a second opinion before spending large amounts.

Thanks in advance
Ben

Don't know Citroens personally but most turbos have a boost control valve-it is possible for this to stick but this valve is usually controlled by a vacuum servo-that should be checked(tho' it sounds that the dealer may have checked it) and yes,too much pressure could blow your motor.

Most modern turbos have variable geometry, therefore no wastegate is required. But of course, when the variable bit breaks, which they often do, they can stick on max or min, or anywhere in between. Not the best arrangement, as it's a pretty hostile environment, but that's new technology.

HI

My xsara 110 at 58,000 miles did exactly the same. It would lose power and eventually if pushed go into limp home. The dealer changed just adout every actuator and the MAF. The problem was only cured after fitting a new turbo (the wastegate actuator is fixed to the turbo). It has since covered almost 40k miles getting better alll the time (Quartz 9000 every 10k miles)

They also have an rubber air pipes that drop off causing this problem, jus tlook round for open ended air pipes before you go down the expensive route.

I visited Power Line in Shipley, Yorkshire, after getting their name from the Bosch website.

The tested the car in the garage, on the road and again in the garage after a drive. Connected computers, removed engine covers, looked under and over the car and decided that there is no problem!!

The dealer previously wiped a crankshaft sensor code from the ECU and the car has been fine since then.

Any more problems and I'll take it back to the specialist.
Thanks to everyone who has posted here.
