My Vauxhall Astra requires a new diesel pump, (cost, about £200), but apparently this is part of the security system and the pump needs to be reprogrammed by a main dealer.
The dealer has estimated this will cost £2000, (the car's value is about £3000).
Is there any way around this? Is it possible to remove the immobiliser?

That doesn't sound right, just to add a security code into the ECU.
Check out a couple of other Vauxhall dealers to see if they quote the same amount.

Are you sure it isnt that the diesel pump is expensive and the reprogramming is £200 - that would sound a lot more reasonable.
|
on the basis that £200 is astonishingly cheap for a diesel pump. You dont give age of car but I know a refurb for a 10yr old vag one cost £500 and a new pump for a saab tdi2.2 (same engine as the vauxhall) was £1700 or so from the dealers - someone posted a while ago.

Call Vauxhall @ Luton - main switchboard.
Ask for customer assistance centre.
They are excellent and wont give you any bull .......
They will allocate a case number and pin the dealer down if necessary.
They are good - try them .............

The cost will be £2200 for the whole lot, that's what I was quoted by the main dealer!
Posted a similar post earlier today re. an Astra fuel pump... check it out. Very common problem ! Getting a recon fuel pump fitted but it was borderline whether or not just to leave the car and walk away.
Going to go back to the 'older' cars I think, I can cope with the £300, £400 repair bills but this car seems to be £1000+ everytime something goes wrong with it !
Had enough, just can't sustain the repair bills for it.

Yes, I think original poster got it backwards. It will be £2k to supply and fit pump, plus £200 to code it to the car.
|
Yep; it's definitely a £2200 job at the dealers - and this is the third one on various forums just today! - or it's about £2000 less to get a specialist to pop the lid off the pump ECU and re-solder the cracked joints.
There's quite a variety of opinions as to whether these VP pumps are actually coded or not. Well worth checking the engine control relay is OK before doing anything else.
