Vw passat 1.9TDi estate, just recently the temperature light has started flashing, the car is not overheating and the water level is also O.k

Is the temp gauge reading ok. Usually 90 once up to temp?
Does it just happen when the weather is cold?
My passat gives a warning once the outside temp goes below 4 celcius.

The temperature reaches 90 but doesnt go over , so I dont think the emgine is overheating, when the light started to flash the temperature outside was normal not too cold.
Do you have a diesel or petrol and what type of fuel consumption do you get.
The steering is also a bit heavy.

I have a 130bhp tdi 6 speed.
At the moment I am getting just over 50 mpg.
Just over 600 miles to a tank. Mix between motorway and urban driving.
Steering is not heavy at all. I suppose check power steering fluid level and tyre pressure.
