On my car it is impossible to leave any lights on (except hazard warning lights) as when the ignition key is removed the sidelights and headlights are turned off.
This raises the question - Do you ever use parking lights?

I don't personally, but the new Range Rovers can be set up to show just the right hand set of lights when parked. I thought that was very clever.
|
Unlesss I'm missing something just about any car I've ever had has done that my the simple method of leaving the indicator on. Certainly the Galaxy, the Merc and the Landcruiser do.
Or am I missing something ?

I thought that by law you have to leave parking lights on, in certain circumstances?
Cant remember the circumstances though. I used to park outside a mate's house that was a 40mph speed limit road, with street lights only down the opposite side. He told me I'd get nicked if I got caught without parking lights on.
On my Golf you used the indicator stalk too; with the lights and ignition off...

You have a problem with your car. It does have the ability to leave all the sidelights on with the ignition off. Its either broke or you havent found out how to do it.
Some but not all makes of car allow you to select l/h or r/h side lights left on by use of the indicator stalk.

Some cars (Fiats) that extinguish the lights when you remove the key can have them relighted by turning a knurl in the plastic surround around the ignition keyhole in the same direction as the key.
|
i think its a fiat as well?as Ishok Leyland says if it is a fiat push the little plastic clip in just under the key and turn the key more anticlockwise,be carefull as if it hasnt been used for ages they jam with the key still in.

Can I ask which car you have? If I didn't read the manual I'd have thought the same of my wife's FIAT but there's a button on the "ignition surround" that allows you to turn on parking lights but not easily by mistake.
And on my Ford there's a park position on the light switch.
Just a thought... could be something similar for you??

Well guessed Ishok Leyland, oldman and rtj70 the car is a Fiat Marea Weekend. There is nothing I have seen in the manual about setting parking lights, so I will try your suggestions relating to the ignition switch. I might discover there is a way to use parking lights after all. Will let you know when I have had a chance to investigate.

Oh that reminds me of the stupid arrangement on the FIAT Uno.
1. With the lights on, if you turned the ignition off, ALL the lights went out. Potentially very dangerous.
2. Use the little button on the light switch to turn the parking lights on AND the main instuments panel was also lit.
Must be some sort of Italian logic!

I certainly have had at least one car, can't remember which, that did this - you had to turn the switch back through the off position to put the parking lights on with the ignition off - the benefit of this system is that you don't leave the lights on accidentally.

My two VW Jettas and now Bora leave the front and rear parking lights on depending on whether the indicator stalk is positioned in the left or right hand down position.
I've noticed that Vauxhalls seem to have the feature as well.
It can be a nuisance though if you do it in daylight and then leave the car for a period, such as on an airport car park....:-)

My Vectra gives an audible warning that you've activated the parking lights, as well as a visual warning in the speedo housing.
