what is the difference between mineral oil part synthetic oils. i use part synthetic in my vw golf. how do hydraulic tappets work i have noticed when i start up theres a little bit of rattle but when the engine starts to warm up it goes away.

the tappets fill with engine oil, the reason they tap is that yours maybe a little dirty inside partly blocking the oilway or your is a little thick to get in there instantly
my vw's are silent from start up...id also suggest you run a vw filter as they have a anti drainback valve that some cheapies dont..you cant go wrong the quantum oils vw sell
dont panic..its no big deal if theyre okay after a few mins

thanks steve for your reply the vw golf, best car i have ever had. mine is jreg 1.4 cl nippy and very good on the petrol. i am going to stick with the vw cars the build quality is beter than some car makers. anyway happy christmas and a peceful new year

I find that Mann Hummel filters are good, and I?m sure that they are the OEM for VAG oil filters. If it?s anything to go by, my VW independent/specialist stocks a lot of Mann filters. They fitted a genuine air filter to my Polo, and it had "Mann Hummel" stamped on it.
Both the quantum oil (I think) and Mann filters are available from GSF car parts and Euro Car Parts at reasonable prices.

I've got a similar rattle on my Micra for the first few seconds. Is there any additive that I could use to clear out the oilways?
|
I have had a Polo and a Sierra, both of which had hydraulic tappets. I think that the current recommendation is to avoid oil additives and just use what the manufacturer suggests in the hanbook, and combine it with regular/frequent oil and filter changes, using OEM filters too!
|
Agree with A S,if they start tapping its all you can do,its more annoying than anything.and unless they get to the point of causing a running problem-usually carry on for years like it,apart from that only option is replace(but dont use additives)

are you sure its not the timing chain tensioner rattling? an additive wont cure this but an oil and filter change may help and then regularly do it from now on (if you have regularly done the oil and it is the tensioner then a strip down will be the only cure).
|
It's only for the first few seconds when the car starts up (particularly if it's been standing over the weekend) so I don't think its the chain.
I'll just keep changing the oil and filter as recommended.
|
While the car is standing the oil leaks out of the hydraulic tappets pipework but is replaced by high pressure oil when the engine is started. The effect is not immediate and, for a few seconds, there is an unusual noise. Also, if the engine has a chain tensioner, powered by engine oil pressure, that too will allow slack in the chain, until the pressure builds up and the tension is corrected. So long as it is only a few seconds there is nothing wrong, in my experience.
