Rover 416i non starting - teeceas
96N reg. Just had head reconditioned after severe overheat.
When attempting to start the engine turns over and fires once but does not start. Changed distributor cap and rotor arm to eliminate. Sparks OK. Valve and Igniton Timing seems OK. Fuel appears OK.
Battery charged fully. All electrical connections appear OK.Compression check carried Out . All cylinders appear OK.

When attempting to start after initial attempt then engine does not fire at all and just turns over with no sign of life. If left for a while then it will fire again once only and then just turns over but again dead as dodo.

Any help would be appreciated.

Manual or auto, reason I ask is auto is honda not rover K series.
if its the manual K series they do not like severe overheating and will distort the block, suspect this may have happened but those that did the job should have checked it before reconditioning the head,if this is the case a new or recon engine is needed.as the head will have been retightened to a distorted block

Heelo Steve
This is a K series 1589 CC. Manual. I put the head back on however the head was skimmed, checked and pressure tetsed by recon specialists. It did not appear too bad on the head and only need 0.007 skimming.

Yes Steve. Cap is marked anyway and double checked.

Recheck your valve timing.as you have fuel supply ignition spark ok,apart from that check the vacuum pipes onto inlet manifold for leaks

CLASSIC symptom of blocked exhaust. Any chance something may have gone into the exhaust while disconnected? To test, undo the Lambda sensor or drop the downpipe off the manifold and see if it goes then.

Steve,
It was the valve timing.
Re timed and it started immediately.

Many thanks to everybody. I am going to give the cooling system a good flush through and hopefully be back on the road soon.
