Is it a legal requirement to produce your licence for an accompanied test drive as I was told by a main dealer today?

I'm not sure if it's a legal requirement but out of the 7 dealers I've been to, all have asked.

They'd be mad not to really surely?

I wouldn't have thought so.

But if the drive was taken on trade plates there may be some requirement there to prove identity.

More likely is that there is an insurance requirement to do so.

Mind you, I would also say that it made absolute sense since they'll be in all sorts of difficulty if something goes wrong and it turns out you don't have one.

I'm not sure if a civil duty to check could be argued. Perhaps.

Intriguing.

Three test drives at three dealers last week. In all cases I just asked if I could try it out, all said yes, none asked for any id or other papers of any sort, or name, or address... I offered my keys to my car as some kind of deposit, (proactively, none asked) all said "see you soon" and let me drive it off.

No hassles whatsoever.

One was a main dealer (Honda) one was a dealer with a variety of just "upmarket" stock, one was a dealer with a couple of "prestige" cars and lots of other "ordinary" models.

Trader's car insurance only insures people that have a valid driver's licence. No licence then there would be no insurance cover.

Any dealer allowing an uninsured driver on the road is liable to prosecution of allowing their car to be on the road uninsured.

This never ceases to amaze me, but I've never been asked for my licence, and I've test driven scores, if not hundreds, of cars. I still have an old style licence and don't carry it around with me.

Maybe it's one of those barriers that dealers put up to some potential customers, just to put them off?

In the past couple weeks I have been doing the rounds trying to decide on a car.

Volvo independent specialist never asked for anything, but accompanied me on drive.

Saab Main Dealer asked for and photo copied my license, but let me go out on my own

Ford Main Dealer wouldn't let me test drive a Mondeo, said I should drive the other cars I was thinking of and when I had decided on the Mondeo, only then would he let me test drive...errmmm...thanks, but forget it.

VW Main Dealer, nothing asked for, but accompanied on drive

Independent Dealer asked for nothing, but accompanied me on two test drives.

It has certainly put me off dealing with them, a business that assumes that I'm the sort of the person who drives disqualified unless I prove different has an odd idea of how to sell to me. I have never been asked for my licence before.

Renault asked for my license and had a look at my car, but then let me drive off, on my own, in a Clio 182.

I'm 21, they must have been mad ;)

I've only ever test-driven one car at a dealer. They asked to see my licence, and I left it with them as some kind of deposit. I was 24 and it was a 525i.

When I test drove privately, I assume I was covered by my own insurance policy. It states I can drive other cars with the owner's permission.

Driving other cars is 3rd party only, so did you agree first who would pay for the car if you crashed it?

I don't usually car mine around with me, but it's no prob to dig it out when I need it. I'll always carry it if I think I am going to drive a friend's car, and if anyone wants to drive a car of mine, I'd always ask to see the license first. I don't want my car driven by an unlicensed driver, and it seems to me to be sensible for a dealer to take the same precaution.

I'm not surprised by those dealers who do ask for a licence, but I am amazed that any dealers don't ask!

The licence is a good barrier that staff where I used to work have used before on customers they don't like the look of who turn up asking to drive Focus RS's etc.

And occasioannly I think we used it on people who were lacking in the personal hygiene department and we didn't want to sit in a car with them. ;-)

My little sister collided hard with a truck and wrote off a Peugeot 307 during a test drive a few years ago. As far as I remember there were no insurance complications or anything, just a very shaken up dealer. She didn?t buy it needless to say.

Not only was I asked for my driving licence at a Honda dealership recently last weekend, but I was also asked to produce another document with my signature on it (probably because my Pink D/L was completely and utterly worn) I was also asked to sign a form declaring the time the car was taken out and returned, just in case I was caught by a safety camera.

tack,

That seems extreme but I can understand the camera issue.

Most times I've driven dealer's stock I've been asked for my licence, and to sign a form explaining that the car is on loan etc.

When I borrowed a Van whilst mine was in for repair for 10 days (thanks Mumfords in Plymouth) they wanted me to change the insurance over to their van and assured me they would be totally responsible for my van until I picked it up, as insuring theirs would have left mine uninsured by me.

I also had to provide licence and sign the form etc, and be responsible for damage.

Just been to visit the local BMW emporium. Licences are inspected and copied if you go out on your own, but take the sales chappie with you (as per today) and there are no checks.

Mind you, they do know me fairly well.

I took my licence down and went on an accompanied test drive. It was a SAAB 9-5 2.2 turbo diesel, what a racket in town traffic! Really amazed that a modern diesel on a big car could still be so be so coarse. Terrific power delivery accelerating from 50 upwards though and the wind and tyre noise took over at speed.
