Put the car in gear, jack up the side that has the noise and try and rotate the wheel, and while there give a good old tug in all directions to try and find any play.

If after i do this and find some play in the wheel ?

Well if there is abnormal play and clonking in the rotate direction its a driveshaft, and any other movement when jiggling the wheel top to bottom or side to side then its a joint, bush or bearing problem.

had a go this weekend and there seems to be movement side to side.....
hopefully it just a bush/joint
