XR3i temperature gauge - 2000GT
I have a 1988 xr3i with 60k.

Recently, the radiator fan went which I replaced. However, prior to this the car was overheating (doesn't take a genius to know why! ! ).

However, now the temp guage doesn't work. Any ideas would be appreciated . . .

Is it possible that something was disturbed when the fan was replaced?. Fuses OK?, then I'd start by locating the sensors and checking the wiring connections, particularly earths, then the wiring continuity.

Are you sure the gauge is not working. I have an 1989 XR3i and when running the gauge hardly moves from rest. To get it towards the centre one has to give it some wellie in third.

Or, it could be the temp gauge sender unit kaput which is located on the forward facing side of the cylinder head adjacent to the thermostat housing. Disconnect wiring before unscrewing.

Sounds like you have a leaking or badly seated thermostat;it should get upto the middle of the gauge even at idle.

DVD you either have a bad connection on sender,or sender has had it.unless of course the stat is not working correctly-ie sticking open.if so you are using more petrol than you need be

The sender is on the head, just right of the exhaust manifold. It has a single wire going to it. Wire undone/loose is what I'd check first, otherwise it's bad coincidence that the sender has gone!

DVD, it sounds like the thermostat has gone as has been suggested. It should read in the NORM area after a couple of miles. My escort reads bang smack in the middle, thrashed or not.

Thanks Guys,

It used to get up as far as a third of the way. I will give your suggestions a go and let you know how I got on.

Many thanks.

If you take the connector off sender, and earth it.temp gauge should go to max,if it does not problem will be on wiring/connection

Ok, tried Stev.o's suggestion and the gauge went right to the top. The fan kicks in at the appropriate time but the gauge does not indicate temperature.

Does that mean it's the thermostat?

No, its more likely to be the sender unit itself. The fan cutting in indicates the system is probably getting well up to temperature, which it won't do if the thermostat is faulty. Best check for thermostat is to start the car cold, and keep checking the top hose. It should stay fairly cool, and then get very hot very quickly as the thermostat opens. Too hot to touch in fact. before you do this squeeze the top hose hard. This should pump coolant into the cooling system header tank. if it doesnt, then there's probably an air lock in the system following the overheating.

If the fan's kicking in correctly, and the gauge is topping as with steve.o's test, then it's the sender. Quite a coincidence indeed! Note the colour of the plastic ring at the base of the connector pole. You might need it at the Ford dealer.

I "heart" you Mike Farrow........not a lot.

Set to yesterday and fitted a new thermostat, seal, gasket and clip. Now sporting 6 cuts and grazes on my right hand and my wife now has a complete understanding of naughty words. Why oh why when the designers come up with a vehicle they are not made to strip down to show what problems they cause. The top bolt of the thermo unit sits in a little gulley and if they can tell me how you can get a one and half diameter finger into a three quarter hole without KY jelly I'd be obliged. The other two bolts located by feel only beeing underneath and to the rear of the housing. Alternator, plug leads and coil all in the way but after two and half hours persistence achieved what for me was the nigh impossible and no leaks. (Changed the anti freeze whilst at it).

Needle now rests just below half above the M or Normal.
