Hi,

Looking for help on my sisters car. Its a k reg ford escort with a 1.6 EFI engine.

The fault she is getting is that the car every now and then cuts out. It does it at any speed and in all weathers. She says there is no warning, no "kangaroo" jumping, just that the engine stops and she has to pull over.

Once she has stopped she switches off the ignition and removes the keys she waits for the immobiliser to kick in (light flashes to the left of the clock on dash) disarmes it using the key fob then re-starts the engine. She says it starts up first time and runs perfect till it cuts out again.

The car ticks over perfect and drives perfect and had a quick look the other day and it was fine,never cut out sitting on the drive. She rang today saying it was cutting out again on the way to work.

Any ideas, possible immobiliser fault? could not find the control box for it when i looked.

Could it be the fuel cut off switch? AFIK switching off and restarting re-sets it, so letting the car re-start.

If you're talking the safety fuel cut-off;it's reset by hand.Read the manual for details.It does not work like you say.

Are you talking about the fuel cut off solenoid switch? The one on the fuel rail? Did think of this but would you not get some jumping as the engine runs out of fuel??

Do you know a way of testing the solenoid bearing in mind it runs fine most of the time and might not have the fault happening when i am with the car?

this could well be a fault with the fuse/relay box.(very common on these escorts).Dry solder joints to the efi/fuel pump relays circuit board can cause erratic cutting out.
