Renault Espace ABS pump - jolly47roger
My 1997 model (ie Mark 3) Espace 2.2DT has just been diagnosed with a faulty ABS pump. Estimated repair bill from a main dealer is £1250. Does anyone know a cheaper option - can these be repaired? I was planning to change it shortly - is it worth repairing or should I just take a hit on the trade-in value?

You will be guilty of driving an unroadworthy/defective vehicle if you do not get the pump repaired or replaced, sorry to say. Should be able to get an exchange unit from a Motor factors or through an independent specialist. Good luck.

According the Renault dealer it is safe to drive - only lacking ABS functionality. I can't find an independent specialist around Cardiff - any suggestions?

AFAIK all ABS systems default to non-ABS mode if it goes wrong. Certainly our Volvo used to. So it's no different to many other cars. Bear in mind it will fail the MOT though, a car fitted with ABS must work.

Try BBA-reman.com £525 and 2 years warrantee. Regards Peter

Some systems (e.g. Teves, WABCO spring to mind) suffer reduced braking effort when ABS fails. They don't all 'fail safe'.

If driving with defective ABS then there may be insurance implications.

Try getting a secondhand unit from a breakers.

Sorry, but Ivor is strictly correct. Because the car is known to be incapable of passing an MoT, it is therefore unroadworthy IMO. It won't be dangerous though.

i would go with Aprilias suggestion of sourcing a 2ndhand unit - but have it fitted at a reliable indy garage, don't pay dealer labour rates. Do you have a Renault indy specialist locally?

Every story has a happy ending! I took off the under-wing skirt panel so that I could find the Bosch part number. Couldn't find that but did find a broken earth strap! Repaired the strap and I now have a working ABS system. So much for fifty quid's worth of Renault dealer diagnostics!

Go back to the garage, ask what level of diagnosis they did, then demand your £50 back for their incompetence.

Might be worth shouting it at the service manager in front of a few interested car buyers, usually gets a favourable response.

I'd agree - you should go back to the dealer and show him what you found yourself and demand to know why you should pay for such diabolical advice. Presumably you were given a receipt which details work done and the work required?

I would not advise getting "angry" with the service manager. Be assertive certainly, but remain calm and polite. Focus on the facts of the case.

If you have a detailed receipt and the service manager isn't prepared to budge, speak next to the dealer principle. If that gets you nowhere Trading Standards is your next stop.

My guess is the SM will be very embarassed about how poorly Nobby Nolevels has done his job and will either offer you a refund or a free service. Oh, before you go in have it in mind what you are prepared to accept from them.
