My brother has an escort on a H reg its immaculate belieive it or not apart from i broken door handle, anyway, he has trouble with the auto choke on it, from cold it takes about 2 mins on cranking over until iot will start then he has to lleave it on tick over for another min or so until he can increase the revs otherwise it will stall.
My guess would be faulty auto choke, but the question is how do you replace them and are they a job an electrician like my self with fair mechanical knowledge, could undertake.

Nice to read of a problem apart from the interminable ECU's & immobilisers...(my newest vehicle is 1989 so all these are a bit above my head)
Has it been alright up to now or has he just bought car, I ask because there is often a procedure to be followed i.e. floor throttle before starting.
If it is a new fault, remove air filter to confirm fault is choke flap is not closing when engine cold. If is it closing check plugs/gaps/HT leads.
If auto choke is culprit, doubt if you can still buy a new one now, if you like auto chokes try a breaker for a complete carb, or best of all, convert to manual operation. Halfords used to ( 5 years ago ) sell universal kit with adapters for various models, an easy fit, replaces the heated bi-metallic strip housing on side of carb

I am under the impression that 1.4 wasn't fitted with an auto choke in this vintage, in which case the engine is a CFi unit. The easiest way to tell is if you have an EEC IV module located inside the car, towards the bulkhead, under the carpet below the centre console. In which case you have a CFi. If so it sounds like a simple enough fault to diagnose. Most probably a failed/failing sensor. My guess would be coolant temperature sensor.
