How much was a litre of petrol in 1990 - ( and other subsequent years )
|
The record book I have to hand only goes back to '93 and a litre of unleaded was 48.8p per litre
I think my previous records are in the loft.
Yes, I am so sad that I have kept a record of every litre of fuel I have ever put in my cars from 1980 on wards!
|
I learned to drive in 1991 when unleaded was 39.9.

I found this on the AA site. I know that the link may possibly be seen as a rival site, but as far as i know this information is not available on here, and it answers the question in full.

How do they arrive at the tax calculation?
A price of 391.38, of which 367.63 is a tax rate of, er, er, just a minute, yes it's a tax rate of 1,447.91%.
Isn't it? Or have I gone wrong somewhere, surely someone who progressed beyond year 3 arithmetic will be along in a minute.

Sorry I should have said "of which 367.63p is tax, is a tax rate of 1,447.91%."

I kept similar records going back to 1965 but those for the earlier years were lost during the course of several house moves. I vaguely recall filling the 6 gallon tank of my 1965 Singer Chamois for £4 and the AA information confirms this.

L\'escargot by name, but not by nature.

Six gallons for £4? In what year would that be? Petrol was never that expensive in the 60s.
|
I recall paying 6/6d per gallon in 1971.

I remember working on the petrol pumps in the very early 70's when fuel was 36p per gallon, and you got Green Shield stamps. Lost the job when the fuel crisis came along.

What is more important is the cost relative to your income. I would guess that in real terms, pertrol is cheaper now than in 1990.

Good point well made

There used to be a website where you could type in the cost of something in the past and it would give you the price in today's money.
Anyone remember it?
|
In 1965 when I had my first car, petrol was 2s3p per gallon . Beer was around the same price per pint..
£4.50 per pint anyone?

£4.50 per pint anyone?
Welcome to London my friend!
|
I used to pay 35p a litre in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
Re the cost of a pint. Guinness was £2.50 a pint in some of the Leeds hotels in the early 1990s - glad I wasn't paying for it at the time...:-)

In 1990 I was a student working part time in Asda, making about £40 a week and running a 505. I had money to burn.
Now I?m earning a London salary in a poor Eastern European country and I haven?t got a pot to pee in.

It's about disposable income I guess back then you were the only one disposing of the income whereas now you have help.
It is alleviated a bit now by the better fuel consumption of modern cars.
