catalytic convertor - rover 800 - number8

My Rover 800 has just failed its mot on the natural idle emmissions test.
The mot test station have also informed me that the cat (new one fitted over a year ago has been fitted the wrong way round(direction arrow points to front).
Could this have been the cause , and would fitting it incorrectly have damaged the cat itself??
Any advice appreciated
