I'm having no end of bother getting the steering lock off with either one of my two keys. Rather than change the lock, which would probably outweigh the value of the car, is there a way of removing/disabling the steering lock ? I always put a crook lock on it anyway so I'm not too bothered about the security issue.

For a cheap solution undo the plastic shrouds round the column, remove the barrel, take out the lock tumblers and then reassemble. Your key will turn the lock but so will any other key. On the other hand if you are using a crook lock it probably doesnt matter.

I assume the engine wouldn't start without the imobilser transponder in the right key though?

I just had the very same problem with my 1995 Fiesta (see similar post somewhere else on here). I took it to my mechanic who said it was the tumblers? inside the ignition barrel which were worn. They were replaced for £35 and its absolutely fine now. Better than it has ever been and comes off without any trouble.
