Does anyone have any views on VW auto boxes? I am thinking of the Golf, perhaps Golf Plus, and have no idea whether auto boxes on Golfs are good, bad, indifferent, reliable or unrealibe, expensive?
Thanks for any useful feedback.

Ran a 1995 passat 2 litre auto some years ago and liked both the engine and gearbox which was nice and smooth and pretty conventional. Sold it at 45K. I was worried that it was a sealed for life oil system, which I think means '70k and then big problems and its not our (VW's) fault'. In my view this is a real drawback. You could have it flushed at an autogear shop every 2 years.

My T reg Passat diesel auto has been terrific for its 60,000 miles, no gearbox problems and cheap to run in all respects. I dare say it doesn't kick down as smoothly as a RR but then I didn't pay £100K either!
