Holiday Handbrakes - midlifecrisis
Off on holiday for two weeks tomorrow. I normally put the car on the drive, in gear, with the handbrake off. Is it really necessary to do this. Had a few occassions of the handbrake sticking in the past.

Disc brakes on rear? What type of car?

Put a couple of bricks each side of rear wheel too if you do leave it off.

Potential thieves will be glad you left them some universal keys to get in with ;o)

i did think that dave but i didn't put that in my post, i suppose you could argue that you could get hold of bricks anywhere.

I've had the offside rear wheel on my Escort rub along the tarmac for about 20 yards before, but this was in the wet. Personally I would leave it on, you've then got two modes of holding the car in place on the drive.

Had it stick on an Astra after 24hrs. Leaving the Xantia for 10days later in the week but as h/b is on front wheels it'll just come off with a bang. I'd leave it on and take my chances; what would the insurer say if it ran away?. If you do leave it off chock the wheels with bricks.

My handbrake normally gets used twice a year - on the day of MOT to test it, and then during the MOT - never failed yet.

Assuming you have a manual gearbox, I would leave it in reverse, being the lowest gear offering the highest rolling resistance.

I so often hear it say goodbye

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

Isn't that an MOT fail?

Handbrake on my Corsa sticks after just a few hours - but its usually only when its damp weather. Disovered if you attempt to drive forwards nothing happens, but if you try to reverse the brakes release??
