Audi water pump - trickynicky
Has anyone an idea of the cost of replacing the water pump on an Audi A4 1.9TDI 2001? Also is there anything odd about the flexible brake hoses?

Problem with the water pump is I think that the front of the car needs to come off so you are looking at large labour costs. Might as well do the t/belt & tensioner at the same time.

what sort of odd on the brake hoses ?

The lady who owns the car has been told by the Audi dealer that the flexible hoses are flat and need replacing. I've never seen flat hoses, and I wondered if the dealer was taking advantage.
They quoted 600 squids for the water pump

if they are going to do the water pump,,,then get them to do the cam elt at the same time,,it is in the same area...it happened on my a3...the water pump failed...

lucky for me it was under guarentee
but the price was £300 and that was 3 yrs ago.....

and they say inflation is at 2%

Don't know about the water pump but I have never seen,or heard of,a flat brake hose.As they are made to contain considerable pressure I cannot see how they could go flat. The usual reasons for replacement are cracking/perishing or damage.I would suggest seeking a second opinion.

£600 doesnt sound off the mark for a main dealer, dont know what the pump costs, but likely to be £40+. Lift the bonnet and you can see that you cannot get access to the front end of the engine without taking off the bumper etc. Not sure if they can get away with moving the radiator out of the way or if they need to drain the coolant, I suspect they remove the rad.

Try speaking to a couple of specialists for quotes. Give the radiator a good check over at the same time because they do corrode - there is some plastic that traps water.

The bumper has to be removed then the lock carrier unbolted and pulled forward to gain access. The radiator does not need to be removed, however, the coolant has to be drained anyway...

A full description can be found in the Haynes Manual for the A4.

The hoses are 'S' shaped so that the 'lock carrier' can be pulled forward to allow access to the timing belt, water pump, etc. I suppose it's possible that the curvy bit has gone flat due to the car sitting around without pressure in the cooling system?
