Key programming - 1998 vw golf - jrt01
I recently bought a second hand key fob for my 1998 VW Golf, after being quoted £130 for a new one from my local dealership.

Does anyone know how to reprogramme the key?

I think you'll find it is not possible to do this yourself. VW have always been awkward about key programming - its a job for the dealer or a specialist with the appropriate diagnostic equipment.

Thanks Armitage.

Are there any self help guides out there?? Does anyone know how you can do it yourself. I've heard key programming is straightforward and really want to avoid the £35 fee I've been quoted from VW.

You can programme the remote control part of the key yourself but you will need 2 working keys to do it .One key in steering lock ignition on;second key in door lock ,hold in lock position & press one of the remote buttons on fob.

Hey man, stop cheaping out ;) You saved £130 on the new fob by buying a used one. Pay the £35 to VW, have it reprogrammed and enjoy your 'new fob' :)
