Has anyone discovered how to safely remove the thin film of wax that speads across the windscreen, when a car has been through a car wash (with wax additive) or someone has hand washed it using a shampoo impregnated with wax?

It is almost impossible to see through my screen when it is dark and raining.

I use to use the excellent Trico Screen Cleaner (Traffic Smear Remover) and still have a bottle, but then discovered Simoniz Wax Free Car Shampoo which cured the problem of windscreen smearing after I had washed my car.

Vinegar, good old malt or light vinegar, i.e. Sarsons, not your fancy stuff that has oil added. Splash malt vinegar on a bundle of kitchen roll or similar wipe all over the screen, also wipe along the wiper blades, no specialist product does as good a job.

Sonax Windscreen Wash additive. Takes this waxy film / diesel film / traffic film straight off. You just add a squirt to your washer bottle.

I get mine from the local Vauxhall dealer, however, I believe they all stock it. It's even available in a lemony flavour. :)

I agree with Cheddar. Its my top tip -vinegar is excellent .

After having put the company Vectra through the car wash last week the screen was very smeary- I used vinegar in water last night and I use scrunched up sheets of old newspaper to wipe off and dry the screen and this soaks up the water and stops smears.

Leaves the screen sparkling like new.Very handy when driving through a blizzard on the M23 last night.

I use it on the windows at home as well - I got it from some TV programme on Chatsworth where they use it on their windows as well.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your original tip. The vinegar trick worked a treat and both my cars now have screens like brand new. No more smears when it's raining under street lighting conditions etc. Thanks once again for the advice.

I've tried vinegar twice on my screen recently to no visible effect.
Was clear spirit vinegar I used.
Does the screen have to be bone dry when you use it?
Washed it yesterday with Halfords Advanced Car Wash and dried with chamois- now that worked.

I use good old Sarsons Malt, usually not neat but a fair concentration in water and put it on with a clean cloth or sponge and then chamois off or use wiper blades to get rid of the excess liquid and then rub off with scrunched up newspaper using a fair amount of elbow grease and it comes up gleaming, I use the same method on the windows at home although not so concentated a mixture.

It works a treat and is a lot cheaper than Halfords advanced Car Wash.

Your car does tend to smell a bit like a fish and chip shop though.

Also consider AutoGlym's window cleaner - it's the finest of its type I've ever used (in my humble opinion) and I've used at least 98 per cent of them....

But it doesn't come in lemon flavour as well sadly...:-)
