The brake pad warning light on my '92 BMW 518 has just come on. Can anyone tell me (roughly) how many more miles I can drive it before I must get new pads.

Rather a piece-of-string question. At a guess, 5-10% of the distance you have driven since the pads were fitted new. But you could ignore the warning until the brakes start making a noise indicating metal-metal contact ....

and then you will have to buy new disks as well as pads.
