timing on ecotech engine

Hi can any one tell me if i am thinking right?
I have had the head off my 2.0 omega ecotech engine and also removed the valves etc.
I removed the cam shafts etc, now rebuilding it all have put head back etc,
The book says set the crank shaft to 60% BTDC and sprokets but i found when re installng the cam shafts that i could not get the caps back on so had to turn the cam till would go on,,
I realise i must have done something wrong but have got it all on and prior to taking all this apart i marked the sprokets with tip ex but have installed it all back with those marks in line again, I have closed it all down and put the timing belt back on, I have turned the engine over with a socket and there is no resistance so assume all is ok,
Am i right in saying if it turns over with no resistance or knocking all is ok?
