Clogged Intake manifold. Pug 206 Diesel - clachnacudden
Hello everyone,

it has been a while, which for me and my wee Pug 206 1.9 Diesel is something of an achievement.

Anyway the same probelm just new news. After about a year of misfiring and 'bucking' when I sit at 40 mph/50mph with my foot lightly on the gas, the garage finally diagnosed the problem as a clogged intake manifold. So under warranty they cleaned the ill part out..to good effect no problems since. Until now the problem is slowly creeping back in again..and no longer am I under warranty..

so two questions really, what is causing this and how easy is the intake manifold to clean bearing in mind I have used various fuel claeners to try and aid the situation..

Help, much appreciated!

Best,

Craig

The inlet manifold is upstream from the injected fuel so no connection there.
Maybe a clogged air filter unless you have mice nesting in there?
Seriously- a clogged manifold sounds like a garage fobbing you off.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

ahh pink fluffly dice,

I knew it and all, but why did it clear the problem?

Would a K&N Filter help the engine, in their words 'breathe more easily'?

I guess if you took the car to the same garage with an electrical problem they would tell you that some of the wires were blocked as well !

Ahhh garages, better at extracting money than a mafia debt collector !

fair does! but at the risk of sounding like a complainer, why did it fix the problem temporarily?

On Pug diesels, especially the later ones (like yours) the EGR system makes a right old mess of the inlet manifold. On all the EGR'd diesels I've had in bits, the inlet manifold is clogged with exhaust soot mixed with an oil mist from the breather system. This makes a horrible tar like substance which collects in the inlet manifold. The only real way to stop this happening would be to disconnect the EGR valve, you'll probably see a slight performance increase too.

Because the crud was all cleaned out and slowly started building up again due to the EGR.

good answer ;-)

Serously though that is the most precise answer to the question yet, although someone did suggest I remove the EGR valve before. My questions are where is it? and would this harm the engine in the long run?

Dont know about the 206. But all the 306 EGR blockoffs I have heard off, actually improved performance and fuel economy!

If yours has a turbo, it will be near there. Otherwise look for a lump/contraption between the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold.

My early 306 has no EGR bypass valve, I know later models came with one. Must be a "green" reason.

Not so fast !

I dont know about Pug diesels, but it is possible for this to happen on some other diesels due to crud from the EGR valve being fed back into the inlet manifold on gently driven diesels.

The symptoms you describe afflicted my Peugeot 306 HDi until a recent service revealed clogged fuel filters. The car ran much more sweetly in every way after this was sorted.

it certainly ran much sweeter with the inlet manifold cleaned so I am pretty sure that it was this and not the fuel filter..

The car has no turbo I am afraid, so I may have to ask someone to point it out to me, then I will get the thing out of there...I take it is not simply a switch but a rather hefty item that I will need to unscrew...no references that I can find on the internet give my any indication of what it looks like I am afraid,

Best, and this is a quality site for sure,

I guess what I am really asking is this:-

I have a 2001 Pug 206 1.9 Diesel with the recurring problem of hesitation and spluttering at low revs.

All the comments and reviews point to the EGR valve, can anybody please tell me where it is, what does it look like, how do I get it off and will it harm the engine in the long run, I am a bit of a novice when it comes to cars so any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks to all those who have contributed to a solution and to this board overall..

Best again,

Craig

my pug 206 1.9D (2000) does the same stuttering at ~2000rpm, very annoying in town driving, pug specialist garage didn't seem to know anything about these problems? 18mnths down line it still doing it!

The easiest ways to stop EGR is either to fit a gasket under the valve with the hole blocked or,even simpler, pull the vac pipe off the valve and plug the end of the pipe.

Blocking or removing EGR will improve your economy but increase your emissions(NOX)-having said that for it to affect your intake manifold that badly,it must have been an awful calibration in the first place or something else must be causing too much recirculation.
