Metallic silver to go, Sir? - mlj
The choice of colour is prone to fashion and as such is liable to be 'in' or 'out'.
Lots of advice that white is about as uncool and undesirable as it gets.Metallic is perceived as a good thing and it is not unusual to see rows of cars in varying shades of metallic silver in any car park.
Recently however, I have seen a few new white cars, Mercs, 5-Series BMW and Toyotas that, to my eyes, looked pretty good.

Some cars are colour sensitive I know, but the new Mazda 3 (as an example of this) that sat in the showroom in white looked superb.
Is it possible that in three year's time dealers will be saying: 'Metallic silver? Yes, we still do it but I would recommend a nice solid white for future residuals come trade in.'
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - volvoman
Yep fashions change and popular colours will too. I had an old white Volvo the colour of which wasn't important to me. I now own a metallic silver car, the colour of which wasn't a factor in my choice either. I have quite recently seen a brand new RX8 in white and it looked stunning so I tend to agree with you. I suppose paint technology has moved on and today's white are just that bit whiter :)

Try telling these guys that silver's out.

Go to a very hot country. I go to Israael frequently. I would say that over 60% of the cars are white, with the remainder in a flat colour bleached out. If you see a bold coloured car, it really stands out and that includes mettalic silver..

why white? yeah i know that it reflects heat but does it really work? i would have thought of more importance would be a/c in a hot climate.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - Happy Blue!
Yes, your right. I do think that white is more reflective of heat and light, but also it does not fade in hot, bright and dusty climates.

About 15 years ago, Israel passed a law that every car over 1,200cc had to have air-con. Its great and I think all cars now have it. You know that every rental car you get, irrespective of size, will have a decent air-con unit.

The real reason behind the Act was to reduce road rage and general bad behavior behind the wheel. I think it worked...until 2000. I noticed a definate improvement in driver standards during the years 95-00. Afterwards becuase of substnatilly increased terrorism, the driving got worse and this summer the drivin was back to its appalling standards of the 1980s.

In ten years time we will wonder why they ever made cars in silver, just as we do now with those beige monstrosities from the eighties.

There are so many silver cars on the road that they just look plain boring, and if you look at older silver models which have lost their sheen they are starting to look a horrible dirty grey colour.

Silver cars are the flaired trousers of this decade. Everybody had them, but their photo albums have mysterious gaps covering most of the seventies.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - Aprilia
White was very popular in the late 1980's (remember all those white XR3i's and Astra GTE's?).

I don't particularly dislike silver, but neither is it especially attractive either and on a foggy/misty day silver cars do rather blend into the background.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - frostbite
The only car colour I really hate is red.

The brighter it is, the worse it is as far as I am concerned.

Only exception is deep red metallic - that can look classy.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - BazzaBear {P}
I am glad you made that exception, me and my metallic Burgundy car were about to be terribly offended ;)

Well, I've just ordered a car in pearlescent deep red so I'm pleased somebody else out there might like the colour.

The helicopter Civic is metallic silver.

The helicopter wedding photos from 1974 shows the evidence of yours truly in Burtons wedding suit with flared trousers and pink shirt with silver tie.

The wedding conveyance was a gold Ford Zephyr - you know the one with the huge bonnet and the honeymoon in Devon was touring in a little green Vauxhall Viva .

My pet hate now is a green car - its irrational I know but I will not have another green car after the Audi which was my worst ever motor.

>>My pet hate now is a green car >>

Many people regard green cars, particularly light green, to be unlucky.

Only ever had one - a 1986 dark green Hillman Minx 1725 - and it served me and the family well from 1970 to 1977.

My father also had four of them in succession (commercial use) followed by the Humber and a Super Mink and, again, remarkably good overall. His first Mink, a 1300cc, did 67,000 miles in his first year with it. He always pointed out that that was "between work"!
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - Stargazer {P}
Definitely does work, over 50% of cars in rural Oz are white. Stays cooler and doesnt show up the dust so easily.

I never have and probably never would buy a car with a specific colour in mind. Colour is way down my list of priorities. It's fair to say I prefer the look of dark metallic colours but they are more difficult to keep looking good too. I found white very easy to maintain as most marks and imperfections seem to show up less. That having been said I didn't really like the colour but the car did what it said on the tin which is all I wanted. Likewise with my current car.

An advantage of silver that no-one's mentioned is that it's superb for not showing the dirt. As the owner of a silver car that spends virtually all its life outdoors, I appreciate this. A silver car that's not very clean looks dull rather than grotty.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - v0n
As long as white vans remain white the colour will never come back to fashion. It's goes well with Essex jogging suites and gold jewelery and bold, fat, thick yobs chasing your rear bumper in their Transits. White is gone forever to small town McDonalds parking crew together with cheap ebay lexus lights, whale spoilers and fake valve gauges. It's the new puter grey, it won't be back, it can't be back and if it wasn't for fleets it would be long gone already.

The concept of white vans being any colour other than white is an interesting one :)

"What color do you want your white van, miss?"

"Oooh, pink would do nicely"

I can vouch for that. My Vectra is metallic Star Silver. Only washed it 4 times since buying it in June. Pity the wheels don't stay as clean though.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - SpamCan61 {P}
I'll second (third?) that; I haven't washed SWMBO's Star Silver Omega since we came back from Cornwall in May; still doesn't look too dirty - must train the cat to rub himslef up & down the alloys to keep them clean.;-)
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - Victorbox
DD. I assume they are alloys? As has been suggested before on this site, our Corsa alloys are much easier to clean several months after a good going over with car polish. In my case Autoglym Super Resin Polish. The rain even washes some of the dust off now.

I hate white cars - look as though they've missed the paint shop.

To my mind, although a metallic silver lover, I do think that cars, especially larger models, look far more solidly built in darker colours and much more fragile in lighter ones.

An illusion I know but look how most of us get out of the way if a gleaming black, aggressively styled car comes up behind.

"An illusion I know but look how most of us get out of the way if a gleaming black, aggressively styled car comes up behind."

In parts of london we get out of the way because it will be carrying a boot load of uzi's and blokes who dont worrying about using them.

As a metalic silver owner I endorse the "it does not show the dirt brigade" it never looks really bad despite layers and layers of dirt. The undercoat never shows thro after car park dings, tesco trolley interface incidents or width restriction scrapes either.

Metalic (or pearlescent) rules, Flat colours are a no no. Car wont sell.

Strange then how i managed to privately sell my last three cars within hours of me putting the small ad in the paper, and yes, they were all flat colours and got my asking price on two of them.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - Altea Ego
You would have got the asking price for the third had it been metalic! ;)

But where have all teh exciting colours gone. in teh 1970s we had a bright acid green Fiat 128. Great car and no bumps becuase you could see it coming miles away!!

Our new Trajet is 'warm silver'. It was that or flat red, a metallic purple or a mica silver. Great choice huh? What happened to gloss black, Midnight blue, Canary yellow. Give us some variety!!!!

All the medium sized saloons I have chosen have been white except my current silver saloon. I like white cars but some larger saloons do not look so good in white especially in the UK.
I dislike black cars. I think it says something unfortunate about the owners so I would never own one. I think black cars are for the funeral trade. I certainly do not jump out of the way of black cars unless they belong to said trade or have blue lights on them.
I do agree with larger cars looking good in darker colours.

Yep.

I usually do polish them, but I haven't got around to it on the current Vectra. Besides which, they're a lot easier to clean than the alloys I've had on previous cars. Not so many crevices to hold onto the stubborn dirt.

I'm surprised nobody has put in a word for scarlet -- Rosso corsa perhaps sounds better. Sure attracts attention, even if it's not Italian. Didn't one of the muttering rotters get a Jag X-type in scarlet to review recently? Perhaps it was even HJ of this parish.

& those brides that MUST have a white Rolls Royce as a wedding car... WRONG!!!

Your dress will look MUCH prettier against, say, a burgandy, dark blue or almost any darker metalic.

I also think white is OK on some cars.

As for 'White Van Man', we used to repaint virtually all the Royal Mail vans, we sold (can't think why!!) so offered our customers the choice of colour changes, free. Favourites were British Racing Green & Vauxhall Kings(dark)Blue. So if you see an Escort, coloured outside & red inside, guess where it came from!!

& now all the Police, silver, rather than white, fleet are showing up at auction. BIG mistake - all the repairs are done, only up to the decals. So once they are removed, prior to sale, nice hard edges to do away with, repair & blend in!!

Come back Henry Ford!!

Metallic silver to go, Sir? - mlj
Henry's cars were black because he found out that black paint dried marginally quicker than other colours. So much for aesthetic sensibilities!

My Mondeo is 'b******ust Silver'. Not through choice, but becuase finding the example I was after was tough enough as it was, without being picky over colour - the only colour I didn't want was white or 'Radiant Red'. My ideal colour was 'Electric Current Red' (Who comes up with these stupid names?) which was pretty much met burgandy.

On a side note, is silver less prone to scratches and swirl marks?

The reason I ask is that despite spending the 4 years before I bought it covering 100,000 miles as a company car, the paintwork on my car is immaculate bar a couple of marks where some moron has opened his door into it in a carpark and an area where somebody key'd it on one of the doors. There are not even any swirl marks on the paintwork, it really is lovely. Now I cannot imagine for one minuite that the previous owner hand washed his company car every week, so I can only think the reason why it hasn't picked up dodgy swirl marks from automatic carwashes is that silver is somehow, less scratch prone?
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - MichaelR
Why on earth did 'b******ust Silver' get automatically censored?

Sorry - st-ar-d-ust-silver ;)

One of the cars I rented recently was five years old, and coloured silver. When doing the pre-hire check, I was quite struck by how a very close inspection showed a lot of light scratches and scuffing, but they weren't visible from more than a few feet away.

Silver seems to hide the scratches well.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - Stuartli
My current VW (Reflex Silver) and previous silver Jetta always seem to look as though they have just been washed even in poor weather conditions.

As so many have pointed out silver doesn't seem to show up the dirt as much - however mine gets a wash at least once a weeek just to get rid of the usual light film of crudge that builds up and protect the bodywork.
Metallic silver to go, Sir? - Stuartli
PS

I try and wash the car just before it rains - it's automatically rinsed and dries streak free. Saves a lot of time and elbow grease in our hard water area.

>>Me too, same reason. But the neighbours do think it funny>>

So do mine. In fact the bloke across the road, whose over 80, came out to me recently whilst washing my car and asked if I knew it was just about to rain?

I just said: "Of course!"

After leaving him somewhat baffled for a few moments I eventually explained the reason.

Now he does exactly the same with his car.
