Brillian site, think it should go into HJs recommendations!

My recommendation would be: Don't.
info on building custom bodykit plz - BazzaBear {P}
And if you think we're just taking the mickey, think again.

Go to the site that BobbyG posted a link to. Look at those cars. Switch your brain on and actually think about whether any of those cars look good. They don't do they? They look a total mess? Almost without exception when people decide to 'fit a bodykit to make their car look much better' they manage to pick something which does not fit the lines of the car, makes it look like someone has attacked it with an angle-grinder, several bookshelves and some No More Nails, and of course has all the aerodynamic properties of a brick.
Is that what you really aspire to?
Save up the money. Buy a decent car.

Thanks for the link: the barryboys site is brilliant. My favourite pictures are the two Novas, although both appear to be let down by not having badly blacked-out windows ....

You think they're nice NW?
Go into the forum, click on 'shed of the week' and prepare to be amazed. I haven't looked at many yet, but my current fave is the Ka 5 down from the top.

That\'s quite impresively bad! But I think it has a strong competitor in the Ford Escort 2nd from the top, at wraggy.com/barryboys/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6772 -- not quite as vulgar, but spectacularly badly done

Due to the language used on the above site I\'ve changed the URL so that it no longer appears as a link. To access the above site, cut and paste the URL (no WWW required) into your browser. Ripe Anglo Saxon abounds. You have been warned. ND

This site contains so many gems that it could easily generate a huge thread, but if I could stretch the moderators patience a bit, I\'ll point y\'all to a brilliant Lada-with-fins at wraggy.com/barryboys/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6235 (scroll down a screen or two to see it)

And it still hasn't put you off making exactly the same mistake with your own car?

This could be a life-changing decision. The only people who'll think you're cool will be the shell-suited, burberry capped neanderthals. Everyone else will shake their head and wonder qwhat's happening to the gene pool.

As I have said before, I always think its amazing that boy-racers are prepared to spend thousands on a car to make it worth hundreds, to make it unique (in their eyes) and then go to a "Meet" and join up with loads of others who have done the exact same thing to their car!

My car is uniquely the same as yours!

Quite addictive that site. One thread is about an L reg Escort on which £14k has been spent and it looks bloomin' awful. Its on ebay for £4k and has had no bids.
Can't find any Berlingos on the site though - wanted a few ideas for mine!!! Think a Burberry pattern baseball cap might be a good cheap start!

ive got a fully kitted saxo. im not a boy racer im a car enthusiast. my car dosent look no where as near as bad as novas i agree that theres no point spending money on old L reg cars, mines a 51 reg and im not a jhonno pikey. im just wanting to get into my own bussiness and make some money instead of getting messed around at work.

Adam, the 106 on the second page (something happened to this car, etc.) was my find. No, really.

Seriously though, Saxo, the HJ site will not give you any good advice on how to custom build a bodykit for your car. Most members of the site are either older or take a more mature attitude towards their cars, and I don't think there's the knowledge here for that kind of thing.

There is a huge amount of knowledge on this site and, if a bunch of engineers and enthusiasts from here got together, we could customise a Saxo I'm sure, but we wouldn't want to. We'd probably think along the lines of... why bother, when you could have a Clio 182, or a Civic Type R, or for that matter, a diesel Berlingo, which would cost you less in the long run and always be safer and better engineered, and more fun. Admittedly the Berlingo would need a mattress in the back to be fun, but still...

Maybe it isn't quite as individual - but then toothpaste is a more individual pizza topping than cheese.

"the Berlingo would need a mattress in the back to be fun, but still..."

Or for the "older and more mature" forget mattress and have a couple of dozen boxes of wine and a box or two of single malt from France...

Errrr , single malt from France?????

Shoorly shum mishteak?

Mind you, for us old un's (well alomst 40) the mattresss and the wine would be good - Oh and the company. However I think PoloGirl has better taste than spend time with us.

Er...?!

Not really sure how to take that one, but I'll just assume you need someone to light your pipe and hold your slippers.

I mean... Berlingo??? That's spectacularly unclassy in a Michelle Big Brother kind of way. Give me some credit!

You have a very strange view of men in their 30s PG. We're not all Dave Lee Travis lookalikes!

I've looked at some of the wheeled follies on the bad customisation sites. At least these cars are entertaining, even if we laugh at them rather than with them.

And it has to be said that Morgan created the ultimate Kev-car with the Aero 8!

I started thinking about Kev-car psychology - what are their creators trying to prove? The cars aren't likely to impress girls or serious car enthusiasts (or girl serious car enthusiasts, for that matter!). My theory is that some are created by trainee panel beaters and car mechanics as 'samplers' - demonstrations of their skills, practical rather than aesthetic!

cheers, Sofa Spud

These are cars that are put together by mostly young men who can't just save up and buy a better car. They buy a car that they can afford to insure and run, then customise it. Simply because some of you don't like the way they look shouldn't really lead to some of the pretty unpleasant comments about the owners here.

These lads are just young. They're not hurting anyone (except perhaps a few tender sensibilities). They are also car enthusiasts, like us perhaps?, who just happen to like something that's a little different to what some of you prefer. Surely that doesn't make them stupid or wrong? I don't like the look of most of them myself, but I wouldn't put down the owner simply on those grounds. It's bad enough as it is without splitting people who like cars into smaller and smaller groups based on what they do or don't like.
-----------------

Saxopower, I don't know much about this but I would think that you need to look into fibreglass moulding. Have a look on the Internet. There's bound to be a lot of info there. If it were me I'd be looking for a job at a boat builders or similar where they do this sort of thing all the time.
info on building custom bodykit plz - Mapmaker
The unpleasant comments are on the barryboys site. I couldn't work out what sort of person contributes to that site. Why make such a virtue about being quite so nasty to the people who keep Halfords afloat & therefore cheaper for the rest of us. (Yes, I'd rather shop at GSF, but they're miles away.)

But that site must be one of the funniest I've seen in a while; it make me splutter into my computer screen several times. Surely these people do it to be amusing. I mean that furry dashboard in wraggy.com/barryboys/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6772 is surely intended to be funny.

I don't advocate being unduly nasty about Barry-boy cars, but poking a bit of fun's OK. As long as these young men drive safely and don't do things like pump the tyres up to 80psi just so they get better wheelspin, a few bits of GRP and a dayglo green paint job isn't going to hurt anyone!

Anyway, I once had an ALLEGRO - feel free to laugh, to mock even! But at least it didn't have that square steering wheel.

Cheers, Sofa Spud.

sounds like my Allegro. With a round steering wheel, I always thought it wasn't quite the real thing :(

Hate to answer the question (because looking at the pictures made me laugh) but....

Decide whether the parts will be made from steel / aluminium, fibreglass (grp - glass reindofced plastic), ABS plastic (vacuum or pressure formed) or kevlar. Come up with some design sketches and send them to a few manufacturers who already make parts in the material you choose. As an example, bath manufacturers will be very good at vacuum formed plastics and can give you a quote for tooling and the component cost. Manufacturers of fairground rides or shop equipment will be familiar with fibreglass.

You can then decide whether to go with the supplier or to do something similar but on your own. Tooling and equipment for fibreglass is cheap, but everything else will be expensive for setup costs (hence using someone who already has all the equipment)

Do a web search on a few of the materials and methods mentioned above to get a feel for what's involved, and good luck!

Gareth

Or at least one very like it, the really amusing thing is I was driving a normal Ka I'd been given as a courtesy car :D

They thought the look of horror on my face was one of envy
