'comma air conditioner cleaner' - available from Halfords and all good motor factors, according the the Telegraph motoring supplement on Saturday, and according to Comma's website.

Has anybody actually seen any of this fabled beast on a shelf ? - if so, where. I called at three motor factors and three branches of halfords over the past two days, and all I got was six blank looks. Emailed Comma for a list of stockists, but no response so far.

Mike

Have you tried putting in into google?
I'd bet you'll find a few mail order places that can send it to you. Probably be cheaper than Halfords too.

You'll have to try and win one of the 10 canisters on offer in the Telegraph competition...:-)

Or order p and p free from here:

Don't know how much it normally costs at Halfords.

A similar comment was also made by George Fowler (Daily Star's motoring guru) recently that it was for sale in branches of Halfords.

I use Neutradol from the shelf in Tesco at a quarter of the price of the Comma stuff and just as effective.

air conditioner cleaner - Stuartli
Yes, but is Neutradol quite the same thing?
air conditioner cleaner - borasport20
Colin - where did you buy the Comma stuff from then ?

Hi Guys
Was looking for this myself in Halfords - just got blank expressions or "we did do it but not any more".....
Found some on the net though www.auto-unique.co.uk
Will cost you £14.99 incl vat and delivery.
I have ordered mine yesterday - from the description its industrial strength stuff that you set off in the car and then leg it.
Its odourless and works in about 10 mins.

Will let you know how I get on with mine.

Thanks

Craggy - look forward to hearing your results. My problem is that I get a distinctive and not altogether pleasant smell when I turn the a/c off, and deodorisers don't make any difference

A mystifying thread. Pardon my ignorance, but what do you do with this stuff? Spray it on? Put it in?
air conditioner cleaner - borasport20
its all here....

Is it really necessary?

After all a/c dehumidifies by itself which will reduce the number of bacteria to virtually nil. What's wrong with running the a/c all the time, which will be cheaper that a can of stuff for £15 plus p+p and as long as you kepp your car clean, there should be no smells anyway?

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

I'd a can of Neutradol , normally used to rid doggy smells.
Set the airconditioning to recirculate t with system biased to dash vents (Passat), gave a good spray into the footwells and hurriedly shut the door.
Seemed to work, ponged of perfume for a while though but musty smell went.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

Many thanks for the lead, borasport20.

Hi Guys
Right , tried out the can of stuff at the weekend. What you do is put the aircon on full heat and the fans on recirc on full and then press the nozzle down till it locks and then exit the car.
The can discharges in about 3 - 4 mins and then the mist will clear.
I had a small bit of residue on the screen and on the dash but that wiped off easily enough.
The smell has gone and I suppose all the "bugs" that may have been in there (car is now 7) have been zapped.
Good stuff and easy to use.

I did the same, but with Neutrasol - sprayed it all around the interior, got out, left the engine running, doors shut and the a/c plus recirculate on for five minutes or so.

Whole car smells as sweet as a (newly cleaned) baby's bottom now...........

Neutrasol cost only £1.99 for big aerosol can at Morrisons.

I was looking at some of this stuff for sale yesterday. And yes,it was in Halfords! (Bangor,N.Wales branch) Did not take too much notice as to price, but there seemed to be stacks of it.

An aircon repair specialist I used a few years ago reckoned all these expensive cleaners are a waste of time for most people. He said that if someone really does need to clean a system, all you need to do is to mix some household bleach with water (heavily diluted), then spray it into the aircon air intake with the aircon running, and then turn off the aircon a couple of seconds later (ie just long enough to get the mist into the pipes), then leave for a few hours to dry out while killing any bacteria.

A hydrogen peroxide-based bleach would be a better solution.

16 year old thread resurrected! Marvellous. I run my cars on autoclimate which engages the aircon for heat and chill with a temperature control. Never had a problem. Problems seem to occur when the aircon is used infrequently, i.e. high days and holidays. I think the seals dry out and they need re-gassing or residue lies in the pipes and festers and causes the smell. Use the aircon all year round and it will keep the car fresh and odour free.

Cheers Concrete

But a good topic to revisit, if only to point out Concrete's good sense - leave it on all year.

I'm not convinced that if you do that it will need frequent servicing. Audi recommend AC servicing every two years, which may well be an exercise in generating revenue rather than clean air.

Just had a A/C service on my 10 year old car with auto climate as it started to lose effectiveness. A/c has always been left on in that time and it's never had any bad smells coming from it. All main dealers recommend a 2 year A/C service but it's just a money making exercise in my opinion.

I hope I'm not tempting providence by reporting that the aircon on my now just 11 year old Hyundai i30, which is on all the time, still works but perhaps not quite as cold as when new. Never re-gassed or serviced, though over the last month I can hear a slight rumble from the compressor.

I have therefore priced these up, looks like £250 -300 for a new one, plus a new dryer, new gas and installation.

I will gladly spend up to £1000 on this car rather than change it for a new one which will have all the nanny state "safety aids" like AEB, lane guidance, dashboard hints to change up, etc,

Although this car is getting on now it still serves well and has never let me down. I'd be willing to spend them money on a repair like yourself up to 1k as I know the cars history, it still drives well, good on fuel and cost peanuts to insure and run. Plus I don't really care about dings in car parks.

Thanks - I see the post to which I responded has now been removed altogether. Just gently pointing out that I didn't randomly resurrect a 16 year old post, but just responded to someone else's comment yesterday (but which is no longer visible!)

Just don't use the cigar lighter or smoke whilst doing so (boom!). :-)
