Fiat JTD Engines - Mr Moo
I'm in the market for a second car and it looks as though the Fiat Marea Weekend JTD estate cars represent excellent value - around £3k for a 99 - T reg. I'd like to track down a JTD 130 2.4 5 cylinder engined model and wondered whether anybody had any expereince of this engine or the 4 cylinder JTD 105 model? From what I've read, these engines appear to get a good write up and seem to be one of the more cost effective ways to get a common rail diesel. For the same sort of money, I'd be looking at the indirect injection XUD engined PSA cars (...with possible head gasket problems...?) as the HDi engined cars are out of my budget.

Am I right in thinking that the JTD engine is free of any major/recurring faults? I read somewhere that the 5 cylinder petrol engine has to be removed from the car to change the cambelt - is this also true for the JTD 130 diesel?

Any comments from owners on the longevity of the rest of the car?

Many thanks.

They are good value but they have a few problems. The 5 cylinder jtd I think does need the engine removing for a cam belt change (there may be fiat specialists that can do it without) and it needs changing every 3 years and 36k. Looking under the bonnet there is very little clearance around the side of the engine. The air intake is reasonably high up which is good if you like splashing through puddles.

My dad test drove a v reg one with about 100k on the clock. It was very noisy engined example and the ride was terrible (but the shocks may have been knackered if they had never been replaced). The underside of the car didn't look very good unlike the citroen ones of that age.It did have a huge amount of boot space but this one had a horrible grey leather interior. I think the latest ones, y reg and later were a lot better in the engine department. This v reg sounded like a tractor.

There's probably more info in the car by car breakdown.

This engine doesn't have to be removed on the 156 for a cambelt change but I can't speak for the Marea (although it's a similar size and layout).

I would suggest you ring a Fiat/Alfa specialist like S&H motors in Poole (01202 680660) and have a quick chat with them as to what is involved. They're competive enough that I've known people drive 80 miles each way to use them for a service and cambelt change. I've used them for a couple of major services and a cambelt change and can't fault htem.

The Marea is known for having a soft ride at speed and can be a bit crashy, but as you say, a very cheap way to get into a reliable common-rail engine with a fair bit of grunt.

BTW, you can easily have this engine remapped to 180BHP....... (195BHP for the 136bhp version as installed in the 2000 156)

:o)

5 pot JTD definitely isn't an engine out job, certainly not in a 156, mines just been done & it was 5 hours @ £ 45 per hour, fixed price including rest of service £ 580. This was Medway Alfa in Rainham.
HGT Fiat petrols do need the engine taken out, typical time is 7 hours. JTD change interval is 72K, Petrol is 60K.

So I got a bit of a bargain at £320 for a full service and cambelt change at S&H then :o)

Have you priced a T or V-plate 306 HDi estate? Cambelts on those are replaced on a mileage, not time, basis.

Surely having cambelt replacement within a specified time period is a sensible idea? Can't the rubber can degrade without it being extensively used?

The PSA 1.9 TD is an excellent engine and has a very good reliability record, as far as I know. The cars they are fitted in are also much better than they are given credit for, particularly Citroens. A Xantia would be an excellent car to consider and there will be plenty of choice.

I have a 130 JTD ( and have owned it for the past 6 years. ) I am very happy with it and in 6 years I have only had two problems: belt tensioner bearing which needed replacing and a Crank shaft sensor that failed. There was also a minor leak on the air conditioning system which has been recitified and regassed. The vehicle has done 80k and has full service history from new ( I bought it with 15 miles on as a pre-registered vehicle)
It was registerd in Septemeber 2000
The cam belt was changed at 72 k (as per service requirement and it is NOT an engine out job.)
The vehicle will be available in October when I purchase the replacement vehicle(exact date still to be established)
If you are interested then I am looking for offers in region of £1900 for it.
it is metallic red and has been well cared for. and I doubt you will find a better example.
