Audi TDI 110 Decline - redafour
I run a 97 A4 1.9 TDi SE 110.I purchased the car approx 3 years ago,its mileage was 96k.Its given sterling service with plenty of poke and superb economy since. However in the past few weeks I have noticed the car to be well down on power and torque to what it once was.The mileage is now 165k and since I have owned the car it has had 5k synthetic oil changes and doesn`t use any oil to this date.It also has regular air filter replacement the last one just days ago.It has had regular use of diesel power plus fuel addative and regular italian tune ups. There does however seem to be the beginnings of an oil leak at the front of the engine in the area of the camshaft end/rocker cover and the car has become a bit smokey of late. The question is what could be the cause of the recent decline in performance?I would welcome any suggestions.Thanks.

My problem was

I have a 1995 Audi Avant 1.9 TDi, 142,000 miles on the clock (not an automatic), serviced by a main dealer and cared for on the dot. I do a lot of mileage, much of it on motorways. In the last few months, usually when travelling up a long motorway incline, on occasion the car will accelerate up to around 70 mph, but it will not go faster. If I continue to press the pedal, I do not go faster or slower. If I back off, the throttle responds normally. At the next incline, more often than not, there is no problem, and she will accelerate smoothly. I can go weeks with no problem. Yesterday, however, up and down the M62, I had the problem several times each way.
The dealer advises there are 3 possibilities. I am interested in what people in the Forum think. Has anyone experienced this with any car? What do you think is happening? Answer was Bosch specialists have fixed the problem - it appears, Ran a diagnostic check, got values, checked with me fault intermittent, found a hole in a pipe or hose (a 12\" long, thin flexible thing) conducting air in some way into engine, I think they said, which was a fault that would have caused the problem. No certainty problem cured, but good bet. Car now wholly different - accelerates in way not accelerated before - noticebaly smoother and more powerful. £60. I am delighted.

Since when no probs.

Hope this may help

HJ's car by car breakdown for the A4 TDI 90/110, Golf/Octavia 90/110 etc details a problem that can result in power loss on these engines, caused by a split in the pipe that goes between the exhaust (near the turbo) and the ECU if I remember correctly. Does not explain oil leaks but probably worth a look...

Thanks for the advice and link. The cars back in the garage on friday.Garage man seems to think the air mass meter could be at fault he says if the tube was split it would whistle loudly.Could this be the case?.I will post the results up on the forum when its been sorted. Thanks again everyone.

Dunno about whistling being a symptom of the tube splitting but MAF failure is not uncommon. You may be able to use a Merc part that it supposed to me more reliable and less expensive in its place.
Do a search on www.seatcupra.net/forums for Merc MAF and you'll find the details.

No, not that one.

Merc MAF fits a VAG TDi after you use a Stanley knife to cut off the little plastic clips on either side. Merc MAF costs between £40-£50, VW MAF costs around £200. Apparently it can also be cured by removing the existing MAF, spraying with brake cleaning fluid, allowing to dry, then refitting.
My Passat is a different car since getting a new MAF - no longer feel the need to get a chip. In fact, it revs more freely than my Leon TDi, although it can't quite keep up ...

According to a recent post on seatcupra.net VW are now doing exchange MAFs for about £50 so it might be worth contacting your local VW dealer.

What make of MAF do you have on your A4?

I have an identical car, mine is made by Pierburg as opposed to Bosch. The former ones don't give trouble.

Thanks for the replies. The garage did fit a new MAF for me to try out over the weekend.Unfortunatley the car still feels very sluggish at motorway speeds whereas previously this was the cars strong point. So its back there monday and he can try replacing the tube mentioned in earlier replies and I`ll report back if it does the trick.

Hi,

What a coincidence - I experienced EXACTLY the same problem yesterday in my 2001 AUDI 1.9TDi Avant.

Like yours, first noticed the problem on a motorway incline and it persisted for next 60 miles to home. As you said, it reached about 70 and then no more. Tried car next day - no problem.

Was going to ignore the problem but thought that I should try to get it looked at as the car is covered by a warranty company for another 3 months only.

Was very fotunate to find your posting - could you please let me know where/who/how you got your problem fixed.

I was planning to take it to local Audi dealer but any info from you would be very useful.

Many thanks,

Jitin Patel.

Hi

I assume you rare talking about my post re my Audi 80 Avant with 142000 on the clock.

The man dealer, Mills, Sunderland, who service the car, did not want to know. They said it could be any number of things, but especially these 3

1. Turbo valve sticking - £35 valve + 20 minutes. Mechanic can tell just by taking on road

2. Cat - £100 - £300 + 2 hours (I think he said 2 hours) Diagnostic while on road

3. Flow meter -£100 + 2 hours. Diagnostic machine would tell, expensive

So they would check off each possibility at potentially considerable cost to me. I asked whether a specialist might shortcircuit that and they suggested I try a local Bosch engine management specialist, whom they named. At first, I was put off these guys. Their premises were a bit mucky, but they seemed competent and honest. I ddscribed the problem to them in detail. They put the car onto their diagnostic machine which produced readings which can indicate the fault/faults, but not always by any means. I was lucky. They immediately suspected the hose I mention, which they showe me, and was just like a bicycle tyre pump connector - thin and flexible - buit about 12" long. They replaced that, since when no problenms. Coincidentally, I read somewhere recently, but can't remember where, but I did, that this little bit of hose is a known problem with Audi's, whether my model or others I can't say.
So unless they are prepared to sort it free under warranty, forget your main dealer and visit your local Bosch guys (they will exist, and good luck. I have sinnce my original post here a year or more ago, done another 24,000 miles in my car and still no problem. And good luck!

Hi vibes,

Thanks for all the info - must appreciated.

My other research on the Net has revealed common MAF problems on these TDis and options for replacement.

Will let you know how I got on - at least I am armed with a wealth of info and knowledge !!!

regards,

Jitin.

Ive recently had similar power loss on a VW Tdi (135K)now fine following a new Air Mass Meter and charge pressure control valve solenoid and vacuum hose.

Hi the car is now cured!.The garage replaced various hoses that were found to be faulty however the original MAF was put back on as the new one they tried had no effect. The cam cover gasket was also changed to cure a slight oil leak.Very happy with its performance again and see no need to refit the tuning box!.Thankyou all the backroomers who gave such good advice.
Chris.
