A quick question on BMW 320I engines.
I'm choosing between a 1991 H and 1992 J model- My question is, will the 1992 E36 model have the same engine as the 1991 E30 model, or did they change the engines between the E30 and E36 models and them change them again in 1994 to have the chain cam version?

My 320i J reg. has chain drived pre vario (fixed cam timing)camshalfs. The engine is as sweet as a nut, only problems have been the plastic water pump and the rubber fuel hose from filter to fuel rail. MPG with autobox is poor.

When you say mpg on the autobox is poor, how poor? would I be looking at 25mpg, or would it manage 30? from what I understand the manuals manage about 35.

22.6 mpg on the 5 miles to the golf club, 35 miles at 22 mpg in an average rush hour, 30-35 mpg on a clear motorway. My 2L VW golf GTI does 1/3 more mpg on the same routes. I only wish my auto BMW would select top gear before 52mph.
