Robert Fulton's Obituary - hillman
Last Friday?s Telegraph had an obituary for Robert Fulton, reputed to be the first to go around the world on a motorbike about 1937. It seems that he made a rash remark about doing so at a dinner. The rest of the table picked up on it, and he had to fulfil. As luck would have it, one of the guests was the owner of Douglas motor cycles, and fixed him up with a custom made bike. In rural Turkey he rode over a bridge which wasn?t there, resulting in loss of consciousness for several hours. Spent seven weeks in hospital in Baghdad with jaundice. He was knocked out in Sumatra when a monkey threw a coconut at him. Jailed as a smuggler in Indonesia. Was accompanied across Japan by a motorbike club 33 strong. The Douglas performed well, only problems six punctures. Travelled 40 000 miles. His motorbike was never tampered with until his return to the US of A, whereupon it was stolen.
He later invented and marketed an ?Airphibian? flying car and the ?Skyhook? aerial rescue system as used by the CIA.
He died aged 95. The world is now a poorer place!
