I wont say 4 is wrong but have you checked out the vacuum pipes from inlet manifold.as if any are split showing signs of splitting may cause it what date is it.?possible cause may be pipe to ecu causing loss of advance retard for timing? I cant remember the setup

GET THE WEBER!

No, seriously, we bought a 1.6 Driver a year ago, and thought it was a bit sluggish. It had 125k on the clock, and research on the net showed the Pierburg *spit* usually gives up the ghost at around 90k. We only found this out after spending £70 trying to fix the damn thing, so save your money, and get down to Euro Car Parts, or GSF and spend around £200 on a shiny new Weber. We've had no trouble since, and it's now done 20k since the changeover.

Of course, we bought a Nova recently, we knew it had a bit of carb trouble - surprise! Pierburg/Solex.

still got the pierburg on mine at 155k so nur!!

seriously though the pierburg is a better carb, just a little less robust. Yours could probably benefit from some TLC.
Haynes do a specialist carb manual which I have found invaluable, when I took mine off the manifold the mount was split, the vac pipes were perished, the vac pulldown unit had a leak and the waxstat had jammed.
All fixable with cheap parts from VAG (except for the pull down unit which I was lucky enough to find on ebay)

My experience with the Pierburg is almost word for word the same as Drew20's. Haynes manual very useful. Only quibble can't get the tick over down to what I regard as a reasonable level, though I'm not sure what to believe on this as different sources give different figures. Anyway mine seems high. I reckon once you've got the carb running reasonably to your satisfaction don't be tempted to tinker. I don't think it's too tinker friendly.
