Is there any statute relating to the size and style of info/messages on reg plates other than the spacing & size of the registration number itself? I'm refering only to the commercial messages that dealers etc put under the letters/numbers of the reg number.
I am specifically not refering to people who manipulate the letters/numbers for "personalising"

I think that the maker of the actual number plate MUST put their name on now.

Soory, not very clear, I mean the dealer or motor supplier you get the number plate from.

Nothing specific at law but:
Road Vehicles (Display of Reg Marks) Regs 2001 is the Bible on such matters.
It gives the size of lettering and states that there has to be a margin Top - 13mm, Bottom and lateral of 11mm, which forms the plate and this has to be kept clear.Outside of these dimensions then Nationality plate etc can be added.
A registration plate must not be treated in any other way which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which would prevent or impair the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.
Likewise under S 43 VE & Reg Act 1994 offence if No Plate obscure.

So you are allowed to have "Dave's Car" or "Eat my dust" or another silly little message in place of/next to the "Reg Vardy" or "Network Q" footnote on the plate then?

Apparently so provided it does not encroach onto the plate area mentioned above.
I used to have my name on my rear plate ..... in case I forgot who I was....

That was always the joke levelled at squaddies whose uniforms had smart nametapes.
Then a German conscript decided to hold up a bank. He went in on his way home and used his army weapon. He got away with a respectable sum but they found him fairly quickly. The cashier was able to tell police his name.....

What about motorcycle rear number plates?

For a trader/dealer (or anyone, I guess) to have their name in small print on the bottom of the number plate they must be registered (in some way) with DVLA. I think this came into force early last year. I know because the Alfa specialist who restored my GTV6 was unable to put his company name on my plates as he had not yet registered and the ruling had just came into force.

A further couple of hours digging led me to BS AU 145 d which tells me:
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -
The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.
..........so it looks as if I have to eat 'umble pie...
