Punto CV Joints - Ben79
A friend of my mum has been told her X reg out of warranty by a few months Punto 1.2 needs something doing to the CV joints and will cost £800 ish.

Sorry for the sketchy details, but does anyone know any common CV probs on the Punto? There isn't anything like that in the Car by Car Breakdown.

Thanks in advance

Ben

You don`t mention why they need something doing.A CV joint normaly if worn will cause a knock on or around full lock of steering. But that isn`t the only reason.I have to admitt price is a bit steep. But don`t know fiat.Need to know reason for it?
Ie I think replacement is likely for that many£££

Even assuming all CV joints needed replacing, would they cost £800? Perhaps one of the boots has been punctured (it does happen) but I wouldn't expect both to fail at that age.

Who is saying this? A main dealer or back street garage?
£800 is far too much unless there is something more serious.
I would be surprised if they have worn out to

I believe this is FIAT main dealer, my thoughts about the price etc

Soemthing odd here.

On a Punto 1.2 £800 would get you a complete fitted pair of driveshafts with new CV joints etc.

Are you sure its not some gearbox rebuild work?

My sister bought a Punto (against all advice) and the gearbox was shot by 25k miles - apparently its not uncommon.

Spoken to the driver. It has been making noises since November, just had the radio louder. D'oh!

The noise occurs when the steering wheel is turned, and not when straight, I thought something on the drivetrain, but then asked if it makes the noise at any other time.

The noise occurs when the steering wheel is turned whether moving or not. A quick look on the car by car shows that it is a fault with the wacky power steering on the Punto. A known fault that if she had taken to the dealer less than a month out of warranty when it started would probably have been sorted with a goodwill gesture.

I said to get some 2nd opinions from a main dealer and from a Fiat specialist as well as her friendly local mechanic. (Full Fiat service history as well), 20k 3 and a bit years old.

It makes the suspension on my Citroen seem sensible!
