My local Ford dealer has had a base spec 1.3 escort (S reg) sitting on its forecourt for almost six months now with a screen price of £3999. A quick look at price guides suggest he will do well to get half this for it, yet the price has not changed at all.

I cannot understand the mentality of this, will some mug come along and eventually pay up £3500 and think they have got a great deal or will it sit another six months before being sent to auction? Even its purple paint is off-putting!

That's awful!

That amount of money at our local branch buys you an S reg 1.6 Finesse, in nice metallic blue, with alloys, a/c, CD player, central locking etc.

How can they justify that for a base model?! :O

Blue - even that's a lot of money. It should put you into a W-reg Finesse, if you want an Escort at all that is.

My mum would jump at that if it's low mileage, which is why she doesn't buy used... "Doesn't need anything fancy," etc. "It's only done 20,000 miles," as if cars got to 100,000 and were then full and you need to get a new one at that point.

I think £2495 would be realistic for that and there are plenty of P-reg ones on AutoTrader in the high £2ks so make of that what you will.

I nominate a Subaru Impreza 1.8 GL, non-turbo, 110k, 94M... up at £4495 recently.

Actually, now that you mention it, I think a V reg may now be possible at that price...

David - They are low mileage, they've all done around 20K - 25K I've found when looking. They all seem like reasonable cars to me for the money, they look smart, are comfortably equipped, cheap to run, and not exactly slow. What more could you want? :-)

I find Toyota dealers game for a laugh in this respect. Some of the prices they quote on use Yaris/Avensis Mk1 are crazy.

Still, there's one born every minute.

There may still be a significant proportion of car buyers who adhere to the rule that if you want something to be good and reliable, you don't buy the cheapest. And some of them may stretch that to the logical conclusion and buy the most expensive. But of course all of us here know that that is nonsense in the car world, don't we?

There is a car dealer near my parents house in bromley that had a Peugeot 309 gti on the forecourt for four years. It was white, had serious rust around the boot hinges when i saw and drove it four years ago. It was an 89G. It was seriously over priced when they first got it, and was last seen on the forecourt less than a year ago at £2295. Nice.

I suspect that the only reason these dealers stay in business is that they allow an inflated part exchange price and arrange a hassle free finance deal - often at a massive APR. The fact that they overcharge a couple of thousand pounds and inflate the part exchange price by a couple of hundred does not seem to register.

On a slightly different tack I often see private owners advertising their cars at astonishingly high prices; particularly where they can advertise free - occasionally even in the Backroom!
Totally unrealsitic dealer values - AdrianM
I expect they base their prices on those seen at the dealers;-)

One important thing to remember about 2nd hand car sales is that the advertised price is simply an invitation to make an offer. The ticket on the window can bear no resemblance to the final selling price. I know of a car advertised in national publication at £8k sold for £4k.

I guess a dealer can always hope that a mug comes along (caveat emptor and all that).

My 95 Escort 1.6 with lowish mileage, neat and tidy, cost me less than 30% of the one listed there!

Those prices are just silly
