Changing the spark plugs was probably a waste of time. What colour were the elctrodes? Quite clearly you have a fuel/air mixture problem. Check that the carburettor controls are not binding. Check for air leaks etc. You could use a carburettor cleaner aerosol on the linkages or a little well aimed wd40 although I don't like the way this stuff gets everywhere. It is also worth checking the air flap door on the air intake. This should be shut when the engine is cold and is controlled by engine vacuum. You really need a proper workshop manual to get all your checks organised.Hope this helps.

Hi Doris,

Sorry to contradict Mikey on this, but you certainly don't have a carburettor, and almost certainly no air intake control flap either, as this engine is fuel injected.

Could be a problem with the Coolant Temp Sensor (not uncommon), the HT insulation, or the Throttle Position Sensor, or vacuum supply to MAP Sensor, to name but a few potential faults. Would really advise you get this professionally investigated, as "hit or miss/trail by error" diagnostics on modern engines can proove expensive. Seek personal recommendations, or look in Yellow Pages under "Car Engine Tuning" for a local expert.
