Best Back Room Moments... - CMark {P}
Guy Lacey\'s reference to his classic Archive \"anall day benders\" thread prompts me to ask for other nominations of classic BR threads and posts.

There are plenty of outstanding threads and posts mixed in amongst the mundane – funny, weird, amazing, tragic, outrageous, and even disapointing.

Here are a few of my favorites in no particular order:

Aaaah, those marvelous salad days, when there was NO registration!
I also seem to recall name-swapping pranks, ie "I really like those Freelanders, and am thinking of getting one for my wife" - Mark (Brazil)

ahhh yes! the name swapping

Credit to an anonymous mod for inserting the link to HF's central locking problem. In fact, I deliberately did not include the link in my original posting to afford HF a modicum of modesty. ;-)
Best Back Room Moments... - HF
Thank you, CMark, for attempting to allow me some form of dignity.

And thank you, Mods, for making the link. At least now a new generation of Backroomers can share my pain.

CMark, I am also honoured to have been included in your list. Quite an achievement, and I am wavering between pride and utter humiliation!

Cheers

I dropped out of the forum nearly a year ago and have recently returned. I had no idea what I'd been missing ;-)

Wow - pride & embarrassment in equal measures at being mentioned not once, but twice. I've just re-read what I'd written in the Nostalgia thread & it's brought it all back all over again!

Also, although I'd managed to gather more or less what had gone wrong, this was the first time I'd read the "as-it-happened" account of HF's misfortunes - I really have to get to the next BR meet so I can commiserate through the bottom of a glass. In fact, having a swift short on your behalf right now HF!

Best Back Room Moments... - HF
Well I certainly never forgot your Nostalgia moments, Andy, nor the Biodiesel ones!

Blimey that sounds creepycrawly, doesn't it?!

'So glad' my historic misfortunes are now being re-reported. I will have to try and come up with some new ones before you all get bored.

Hope you enjoyed your short, Andy, feel very privileged that it was for no reason but to toast me. ;)))

And I know that being in a different country kind of makes it difficult for you to attend BR meetings, but it would be good if you could. Perhaps if you are ever in London you could tell us, and we could arrange something?

I think these are the correct links you were refering to Ian? DD

Actually DD, I think the original PCT thread is here:
Chris Watson wants to start a protest with his friend's tank

The one you have linked to is the equally classic perpetual motion Volvo. Poor old David W!
Best Back Room Moments... - Stargazer {P}
Cheers DD and CMark,

I had forgotten about the perpetual motion thread.

Before this gets too frivolous though, although the threads that stick in the mind are often the less serious ones, perhaps the ones I find the most useful are the detailed technical threads or the legal or insurance threads where a complex problem is well presented and discussed with a detailed solution being the result together with a detailed followup at a later stage.
Whilst not so entertaining these often have the information to save me money or keep me on the road.

keep the back room going!

The edit button saga was fun, but Martyn's follow up thread all in a panic (believed it all) was the icing. Twas deleted sadly.

Stu.

I still blame DW and Mark (Nuts).
Best Back Room Moments... - M.M
Stuart,

I seem to remember DW actually working *that* day and it being down to others.

CMark's idea for this thread has given excuse to revisit the archives....some truly brilliant threads which have made me smile. I'm not going to link and then risk having them deleted!!

Stephen's recent Forum Search is absolutely brilliant for finding stuff with just a hazy memory of a couple of words and the Poster's name.

I didn't know about your Espace being stolen Stephen...excellent! Glad you like the Honda. Do remember though now you've signed up to Honda never ever tell anyone if it does go wrong.

Stephen Khoo\'s espace engine failure
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=55...2

How flattering! Actually what is more amusing that some won't be aware of is that the Espace got stolen from the garage the day before the replacement engine arrived. The garage had put the sump cover back on and filled it with enough oil to get it off the ramp. I think the theives only took our car to put all the garage's tools in as it was the only large car there. Well, maybe it never made it to it's eventual destination.

So with the insurance money we went out and bought a Honda Shuttle HJ spied going through the auction. You can see our car in the photo in the car-by-car as HJ did a once around for me.
Nice to have friends like that isn't it?

Needless to say the shuttle has been v reliable.

Best Back Room Moments... - CMark {P}
Hi Stephen, I am sorry if I have caused any embarrassment, it was certainly not my intention.

As an automotive engineer, the reason I found this thread so interesting is that it is a very sobering tale of what can happen to a nice, fairly new car when it all goes horribly and expensively wrong.

You kicked the thread off with well written summary full of facts and go on to describe how you were left high and dry by the manufacturer, the dealer and the warranty company. The tale carries on with plenty of quality reasoned feedback from many of the old guard stalwarts.

And now the piece de resistance. The damned thing got stolen ! Good riddance.

Here is another classic post.

Best Back Room Moments... - Ian (Cape Town)
One which was priceless, but sadly deleted ... (I suppose that's better than getting sued, HJ!)

HJ's "The things I have to put up with on a Sunday afternoon" - re - a cyclist complaining about a caption in his weekly column.

PS, how can we forget the thread on Power cleaners and slippers?
Or Randolph Lee's tale of unsticking a Freelander full of models from the mud on Christmas Day?

Ian CT, happily, the only thing deleted from the thread was the chap's name:
