Hi, having taken my car to be inspected for it's faulty air con unit(bolt had snapped off) causing a new non air con fan belt to be fitted I was faced with another problem.

On lifting the bonnet, the oil cap had come loose and the top of the engine block covered in oil. The chap managed to re-seal the cap and it is now fine but he told me as he stated at the time that it was because the engine was fighting aganst the auto box (which he previously said was knackered).

When I first collected the car from him there were several auto box problems for a couple of weeks when revved medium to hard and I then had to resort to D1,2,3 etc.

He did a quick check by turning on the sports mode and then the weather button next to gear shifter and told me the auto box was not switched on as the TC light would have come on briefly if it was.

When he fixes the aircon he said he'd atke another look at the box. He has a new £7k piece of kit which plugs into the ecu giving fault descriptions as well as codes. As far as I can tell the auto box seems to be operating ok, altho it did clunk a little when not used for a week to start with between changes.

I'd be grateful if anyone could shed any light on or ideas on this. I have been to Vauxhall and they couldn't decipher the original fault codes!!

I don't really understand the question, as you can't switch on an auto box. You've either got one or you haven't.

Why "fighting against the auto box" would make the oil cap come loose is also a mystery.

His check with the sporting button and the ice button sounds like utter codswallop to me.

My advice in this situation would be to take it to a garage that knows what it is talking about and can explain this to you in plain English. The joker you are currently using sounds useless, and if I were you, I wouldn't let him near my car. There is a list of good garages elsewhere on this site.

If you feel there really IS a problem with your auto box, there's a page in the FAQs on this site www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/faq.htm?id=16 that lists specialist automatic gearbox engineers, who will know a hundred times more than your current chimpanzee.

To be homest I thought an auto box was an auto box.

Like I say took it to Vauxhall who couldn't decipher fault codes for their own cars!

Cheers for the advice

Hi Daz;

You seem to have suffered every Omega fault on the planet over the last few months :-(. I believe auto box fault codes can be read using the same 'paper clip' method as main ECU faults, or do I now understand there are no faults logged for the auto box now?

P.S. Vin : the Omegas rolled out of Rüsselsheim, not Luton ;-)

Problem is as far as I can make out the gearbox is ok, I'm just going by what the mechanic says, plus it's had over 20 starts ok so I would not be able to pull off code anyway!

\"P.S. Vin : the Omegas rolled out of Rüsselsheim, not Luton ;-)\"

I stand corrected.

Is this correct about getting the fault codes for the gearbox?
I know how to get them for normal engine codes but didnt realise you could do the same for the gearbox.
Can you tell me how?
Cheers

Hi, Are you still having problems with your autobox or have you found a cure. I seem to be having the same problems.
