Several times recently, my Volvo V40 alarm system has activated for no apparent reason. I now have to leave it locked but unalarmed for fear of disturbing the neighbours yet again. Any ideas or is it a major dealer investigation job?

Do you have an interior alarm inhibitor switch, if so switch to off to start the process of elimination. In addition (as unconnected as this sounds) what was the weather like - any extremes or similarities when the alarm goes off?

I am not aware of an interior inhibitor switch. The weather has been variously very warm (at night) very wet (at night) and fairly normal(this morning)

I am surprised about the inhibitor switch, have a look at the owners manual.
If there is no trend identifiable as to when the alarm goes off then I would do the basics and check that all openings are shutting correctly, no interior light coming on and no objects are moving in the car when you've alarmed.
